Iran set to sign $16bn deal with Boeing for 80 planes
The planes will be delivered over a 10-year period, Farhad Parvaresh, the managing director of the Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization, told Iran’s official news agency IRNA on Sunday.
The deal includes 50 737 MAX 8s, 15 777-300ERs and 15 777-9s, Boeing said in a statement on its Web site on Sunday.
GORDON JOHNDROE: Today’s agreement will support tens of thousands of U.S.jobs directly associated with the production and delivery of the Boeing 777 and almost 100,000 U.S.jobs in the USA aerospace supply chain.
This would be the largest business deal that a US company had done with Iran since President Obama signed an executive order lifting sanctions against the country.
The President wants us to sell planes not just to this unsafe regime, but to an airline that his own Treasury Department sanctioned in 2011. However, right-wing Americans have not been the only opponents of the deal; conservative Iranians have also voiced their objections against buying aircraft from the United States.
The approval was the result of an worldwide nuclear agreement signed by Iran and six world powers in July 2015. Such a step could prompt a dispute with the Europeans and with Russian Federation and China, and stoke tensions and even an escalation toward Iran, which may renounce the agreement and even try to break out toward nuclear weapons.
Secretary Kerry Posed for a Group Photo With EU, P5+1, and Iranian officials before the final plenary of Iran nuclear negotiations in Vienna, Austria. If it too late for Mr. Trump to undo this entire fiasco because he won’t be able to get our allies to go along with renewed sanctions, he can at least mitigate the damage by preventing the Iranian regime from getting its hands on advanced USA aircraft, component parts and technologies.
But Boeing’s deal could face opposition in Congress and the White House.
The Boeing-Iran Air agreement would be the largest deal with a USA company since the 1979 Iranian revolution.
Iranian Transport Minister Abbas Akhoundi said the modernization was an “important step”. He added that the deal would create 8,000 jobs in Iran.
“60 trillion tomans: Iran’s gift to the United States for violating the JCPOA (nuclear deal)”, read Monday’s headline on the hardline Javan newspaper.
“We are hopeful that President-elect Trump’s extensive business and hospitality background will make him receptive to the value of the travel industry”, she said.
Furthermore, Kuperwasser said, appointments made by Trump thus far “bolster the impression that he will choose” the renegotiation option over stricter enforcement of the deal or the imposition of additional sanctions related to non-nuclear issues.
Boeing chief executive Dennis Muilenburg spoke to Trump by phone the next day. Boeing has an agreement to build new airplanes for the president, known as Air Force One. The two companies’ agreements are a result of the July 2015 Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA), which lifted nuclear-related sanctions on Iran in return for curbs on its nuclear program.
However, Trump’s reaction to the finalization of the deal is even harder to predict, given that he recently slammed Boeing for its “out of control” Air Force One expenses and subsequently called for cancellation of all orders last week.
Upon announcing the Iran Air order, Boeing emphasises the importance of preserving American jobs, a top priority for Trump’s government.
NORTHAM: If Trump does decide to renegotiate or unravel the Iran deal, it could be a boon for Boeing’s fiercest competitor – Airbus.
