REPLAY: Redskins come back to beat Eagles, 27-22
The Redskins lead stands at 21-19 after the Eagles failed to tie the game on a two point conversion. This current Eagles team, losers of eight of 10, will try to get out of their tailspin next Sunday in Baltimore against the Ravens.
Pederson challenged the play and lost, costing Philadelphia a time out.
Carson Wentz dropped back to pass. Kerrigan sprinted around a blocker and rammed into Wentz, gaining his 11th sack of the season and forcing a fumble the Redskins recovered. In Sunday’s game at Philly, Kelley only carried the ball 16 times for 63 yards.
Redskins coach Jay Gruden credits Jackson’s baseball background for his ability to make similar plays.
While it is unclear if any of those players will be ready for the Panthers game, Gruden said none of them would be going on season-ending injured reserve. Then Allen Barbre went down during the game, which forced Matt Tobin into action. The Redskins are 6-5-1, coming off a 31-23 loss to the Arizona Cardinals.
“You can say that maybe a little bit”, quarterback Carson Wentz said after the game. The Eagles got all the way to the Washington 14-yard line before Kerrigan’s strip sack on 2nd-and-10.
Then came coach Doug Pederson’s sheepish declaration that “not everybody” on his team played hard the following Monday. “They hung together. They battled”. The Cardinals had success against the Redskins last week when they used the blitz and came up with a key interception.
Jackson’s 80-yard touchdown-and the ensuing extra point-gave Washington a 14-13 lead.
Wide receiver Dorial Green-Beckham is also listed as questionable, but he missed the first two days of practice with an oblique injury so he may not be as good a bet to play as his teammates. Kirk Cousins threw for 271 yards, one touchdown and one interception. Rob Kelley knocked over a defender at the end of a nifty, 22-yard TD run. In the loss, Wentz threw for 314 yards and threw one touchdown.
“If we even want to talk about playoffs, we had to win this one first”, Jackson said. They were 5-for-5 in the red zone in the previous three games after converting just 7 of 18 trips into touchdowns in the five games before that.
Without Dorenbos, the Eagles turned to emergency long-snapper Brent Celek on what would’ve been a 50-yard field attempt by Caleb Sturgis in the third quarter. Trey Burton calmly stepped in and launched a snap to Donnie Jones who did a solid job of catching the high snap and getting it down for Sturgis.
On the ensuing punt Darren Sproles was slammed in the head by Deshazor Everett, who drew a penalty and triggered a near brawl. He’s been frustrated since the start of the season, when it became obvious he was a part-time player. Sproles returned a punt 78 yards for an apparent touchdown, but that was wiped out by an illegal block by Zach Ertz.
On the opening possession of the game, the Eagles marched down the field against the Redskins to take a 3-0 lead.
Part of the reason for his decline has to do with health, as Jackson missed six games in 2015, and won’t play all 16 games this season. He mingled and exchanged hugs with stadium personnel on Philadelphia’s sideline before the game. Eagles rank second in National Football League in time of possession (31:48).
As the Washington Redskins entered week 14 they knew they no longer controlled their own destiny.
This week, though, Vaitai is out with a knee injury.
