Giants snap Cowboys’ 11-game winning streak 10-7
And the 10-7 defeat Sunday night to the Giants makes the Cowboys seem quite a bit more vulnerable than they appeared just 24 hours ago. Tonight we have the renewal of a traditional NFC East rivalry between the Dallas Cowboys and the New York Giants.
Looking back at the first game between the Giants and Cowboys – teams that will clash once again Sunday night at Met Life Stadium – is like digging into ancient history.
Tony Romo Twitter can’t handle the loss and is ripping current starting quarterback rookie Dak Prescott to shreds. Eli Manning and the New York Giants defeated Dallas in Week 1 of the season by the final score of 22-19.
The Dallas Cowboys, realizing the game was getting away from them, responded with a decent drive.
“We have a big game, a big opportunity for us in the division”, coach Ben McAdoo said. “And I think that’s what Coach is trying to instill in us, that we need to come out firing, and see how they respond”.
The Cowboys’ offence rightly gets showered with most of the glory for the team’s 11-1 start.
If the defense plays the way it did against Dallas, the Giants are going back to the playoffs for the first time since winning the Super Bowl in February 2012 against the Patriots. They did not shut down rookie RB Ezekiel Elliott the way they did back in Week 1 (who could at this point?), but his 107-yard night was mostly harmless.
The rookie has endured just one game since (Philadelphia) in which he completed less than 65 percent of his passes after being held to 56 percent against NY.
Let’s get the obvious over with first: The defense won this game.
Even Pierre-Paul’s loss was barely noticeable Sunday night. The New York Giants’ offense sputters, borders on incompetence, only to be saved by the brilliance of Odell Beckham Jr. and the defense.
The Titans (7-6), who climbed above.500 for the first time all season, are tied with the Texans atop the AFC South. Tennessee hosts Houston in the regular-season finale January 1. “That’s what we said before”. We put some pressure on them. “We knew we had to come in and play as a defense”. I thought they did a heck of a job.
Beckham, who turned a short slant into a touchdown with an incredible burst of speed, felt the same way about the Giants’ offense. I don’t want to make excuses. But each of the last three weeks, he has failed to crack that number, as Prescott has just 46 completions over the last three games. I’m giving the Giants credit for creating that inconsistency.
The NFC North-leading Lions (9-4) have won five straight and eight of nine, moving them a step closer to winning a division title for the first time in 23 years. Honestly, those teams could have played in Kansas City and Tampa Bay for all the relevance that has to what lies in front of this team.
There were five games the Giants, 8-4 entering the weekend, were keeping an eye on Sunday. It took a while for the rookie to find his groove, but he got the first sack of his career, and almost got a second toward the end of the game. Linebacker Devon Kennard might see time as a stand-up speed rusher. He had six tackles and a sack. He threw two interceptions and had a season-low 139 yards passing.
“No. No. No. No”, Jones said, when asked if Dak Prescott’s ineffectiveness could factor into a change.
Finally recovered from his back issues, Romo is the clear backup these days to the superb rookie. And so NY will live or die by their passing game. Earlier this year he was spotted with Beyoncé and his daughter Blue Ivy in Cowboys owner Jerry Jones’ box enjoying a game.
“No”, he said with emphasis. As Bradford launched his pass over the head of Kyle Rudolph, the Cowboys defender hit him in the face.”He (the official) told me that I did not get hit in the facemask”, Bradford said.Thornton should have been called for roughing the passer and the Vikings given another attempt at the two-point conversion.
