At Least 13 Survivors in Colombia Plane Crash – Emergency Team PMU
British Aerospace, which is now known as BAE Systems, says that the first 146-model plane took off in 1981 and that just under 400 – including the successor Avro RJ – were built in total in the United Kingdom through 2003. Chapecoense were the 21st biggest club in Brazil in terms of revenue, bringing in 46 million reais ($13.5 million) in 2015, according to an annual rich list compiled by Brazilian bank Itau BBA.
Rescuers and aviation authorities said the survivors were three players, two crew members and a journalist. They also say the club should not be relegated to the second division for three years as it recovers from the disaster, though details of how this would work financially were not immediately floated.
The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that the team was going to Colombia for a regional tournament final. He said two other players, Jakson Follman and Helio Zampier, journalist Rafael Valmorbida, flight attendant Ximena Suarez and crew member Erwin Tumiri also survived and were taken to nearby hospitals.
He said that the LaMia airline hails from the Venezuelan city of Merida but later re-established itself in Santa Cruz.
The airport statement said the plane reported an emergency at 10 pm local time (0300 GMT). “It declared it had electrical failures”. It crashed moments later in a mountainous area near La Union, less than 20 miles south of Rionegro.
Ruschel reportedly suffered head injuries in the crash – but is said to be alive.
Rescuers had to hike for more than half an hour to reach the site.
He said authorities were on the scene and hospitals and medical centers were preparing to receive the injured.
Officials initially reported 81 people were on board the flight, but later revised that to 77, saying four people on the flight manifest did not get on the plane.
The South American football federation suspended all games and other activities following the crash.
Earlier this month, the plane involved in Monday’s crash transported Barcelona forward Lionel Messi and the Argentina national team from Brazil following a World Cup qualifier match.
Chapecoense was traveling to play Wednesday against Medellin’s Atletico Nacional team in the finals of the prestigious South America Cup tournament.
Tributes started to come in after the first reports, with Chapecoense’s opponent, Atletico Nacional, tweeting: “Nacional deeply regrets and sympathizes with Chapecoense because of the accident that happens and awaits information from the authorities”.
Sarvas has been with DC United for one season, but he was born in Brazil and knows the town where the Chapecoense team is based.
