Salvation Army opens Christmas Cheer center in Wake County
She says The Salvation Army received enough community donations for enough toys and clothes for each kid to have one large toy, one small toy, and a stocking stuffer along with a few clothing items. West, said additional toys were purchased above what the Salvation Army purchased to give teens who exceeded the age limit of 14 gifts.
“By providing funding to 26 food banks and Christmas Hamper programs, we’re hoping to lighten the load on local families, helping them to further enjoy the holiday season”. The lists for each child are converted into an Angel tag to be adopted by Lubbock area families, individuals, and businesses. Now, the program has expanded across the country as part of the Salvation Army’s Christmas programs.
“I have never seen it done that way before and it seems, it seems really dignifying, more dignifying for the families to be able to get their own gifts”, said Salvation Army Cadet Chelcee Humphrey.
“It was pretty insane around here early (Tuesday) morning when we were distributing to the agencies”, David Dean said. “Really, that fundraising is what sustains us for the rest of the year”. We made outfits with trousers, shirts and socks, and whatever we could get.
“My clients are homeless, and they are transitioning into permanent housing. We need the help of the giving community to help us out with that”.
The organization also collected food donations, providing turkeys and children and other staple foods to help with the Christmas dinner.
Rev. West said they were prepared with 300 toys, enough to give each child four gifts.
Major David Dean has spent most of the last month trying to get more volunteers for the Salvation Army of Greater Glens Falls’ annual Red Kettle campaign.
