90mph winds and snow for Christmas
This winter, which officially begins today, is expected to follow typical patterns for this region, forecasters said, with a mild Christmas Day ahead. The strongest of the winds should ease later on Thursday.
“They will be highest in the north west, with gusts a bit lower in the south east”.
The decision to name severe weather systems was made jointly by the Met Office and Met Éireann following a series of powerful winter storms during 2013-14 that wreaked havoc in parts of Europe.
“The weather transition has brought snow”, says MacDonald. It’s possible all of Minnesota could see rain and/or freezing rain on Christmas Day, the Weather Service noted.
While it is too soon for Met Eireann to issue a status yellow wind warning, a travel advisory has been issued due to the sheer volume of people who will be out and about on Friday ahead of Christmas.
Gusty winds are also expected, which could lead to whiteout conditions on Montana’s highways.
“The north and north-west will get a side-swipe of storm Barbara”.
However, the Met Office forecast does not seem to suggest that a White Christmas is likely for most of us.
However, it will turn on Friday night and there may be wintry showers on Friday night and Saturday morning.
“It’s expected to be dry through Friday morning, and then we have a little disturbance moving in that could spread a little rain Friday afternoon”, he said.
The Met Office warned of the potential for disrupted travel and power supplies over the holiday period.
By Christmas night, “a mix of snow, sleet, and freezing rain” could move throughout upstate NY and New England, TWC reported.
Christmas is in 6 days, and while almost half of the country is now covered in snow thanks to last week’s massive winter storm, warm air is set to melt away any dreams of a white Christmas.
The national weather forecast for Wednesday, December 21st calls for light snow near the Great Lakes and a few showers in the Desert Southwest.
