Duke Suspends Grayson Allen Indefinitely for Tripping
Craft traded texts with Santa Ana Wednesday night.
When reporters asked Allen if he was concerned over a possible suspension, he replied that it was not in his control so he could not worry about that at this time.
“No more gifts”, Jay Williams said on ESPN.
The player that Duke’s Grayson Allen tripped during a college basketball game last night is a former high school all-star from Charlotte.
During a game against Louisville on February 8, Allen stuck both his legs out and appeared to intentionally trip Cardinals forward Ray Spalding as he ran up floor, resulting in a flagrant foul. FSU’s Xavier Rathan-Mayes and Allen bumped bodies a bit, but nothing too major.
But I’d rather focus on the bigger picture here, namely, how leaders, coaches, and mentors can help individuals who demonstrate a lack of poise in emotional situations. Suspending him may be the only way to drive the intentional tripping out of him. As for the game itself, after the Allen Technical ELON went on a 11-2 run to close the 1st half as Allen Sat on the Bench for the rest of the Half. Yes, he was despondent on the bench and contrite in the locker room.
After the game, Allen met with Santa Ana and Elon coach Matt Matheny, apologizing to them.
But it was Allen, and his tripping, that was the real story in Greensboro on Wednesday night.
“To think that it’s the last thing that’s said about this to him is wrong”, he said. “If you ever tried to trip somebody like that, you’d have to fight your way off the court”.
You can, however, control your reactions to those feelings.
“Allen’s a great competitor”.
Give Allen credit there, he did take a nice step forward in apologizing but it makes it hard for anyone to back Allen when this isn’t the first time this has happened. Over time, you see slight improvement. “Where does that come from?”
But the reason for Krzyzewski’s change of heart matters less than the result.
Allen is not the only one that is to blame. The next two are both at home against beatable ACC opponents, Georgia Tech and Boston College. Here is one in the first half of the seven point Blue Devils’ win.
Even notorious Duke homer Dick Vitale called for Allen’s suspension.
Others were a little more…comical. Allen has battled turf toe so far this season and is shooting just 38.4 percent from the field to get his 16.0 points per game.
There is still no timetable for Allen’s return.
“You could tell the whole half, he was out of it”, Krzyzewski said.
