Google to release two new flagship smartwatches next year
However, Google seems to be shaking up the market for wearable smartwatches.
Google confirmed today that it plans to launch two flagship Android Wear smartwatches in the first quarter of 2017.
Now we know that that is indeed the case. Also, just like most other Android Wear smartwatches, it will have a single button. The Moto 360 was successful, but that’s about it.
Bringing more compelling products to market could help sway consumers. At least not right now. None of that bodes well for Google, which has already spent two and a half years trying to make Android Wear a success, with less than stellar results.
When smartwatches were first launched the whole world went insane about them but as time went on, the demand rate started declining and because of that there are only two major manufacturers in this category, Google and Apple. In the interview, Jeff Chang Wear product manager confirmed that Google will be working with OEMs to promote product launches and raise awareness about the category. However, tech giant Google still continues to support the smartwatch ecosystem. Not building some themselves. Whether the challenge will be a strong one is not yet clear, as the world waits for more details on the devices. This is based on earlier rumors. Without naming the company, Chang said that the company has made Android Wear devices in the past as well. The company is intending to release the watches for promoting the new version of Google Android wearables. Our bet is on Motorola, but anything is possible at this point.
Interestingly, the watches will also be the first devices to pack Google’s latest Android Wear 2.0 platform.
On top of that, Google Assistant will be available on future wearables, too.
With Android Wear 2.0, a user can visit the Play Store on a watch and download a Wear app directly to the watch, it says. This is good news considering the lack of options as the year comes to a close.
Despite a hard year for smartwatches, Google is forging ahead with its plans to release two flagship wearables in the first quarter of 2017.
