Trump goes on the defensive again for losing popular vote
“For United States president, Donald J. Trump, Republican, none”.
Former Democratic Presidential candidate Hillary Clinton has taken a lead over President-elect Donald Trump by almost three million popular votes in the final count, according to an official report.
Muhammad Abdurrahman, an elector in Minnesota, was replaced after making it clear that he would not be voting for Clinton even though she won the state.
“I would have done even better in the election, if that is possible, if the victor was based on popular vote – but would campaign differently”, Trump wrote on Wednesday.
Courtney said he’s been on the list to be an elector twice before, but Democrats won the state in those years.
In the end, The Hill reports that President-elect Donald J. Trump garnered 304 electoral votes.
One of the electors, Alberto Gutierrez, said he had received more than 90,000 emails and enough letters to stack four feet tall.
“I really feel he is the best candidate”, Bond said after casting her ballot for Clinton.
As was pointed out, Hillary Clinton bested Trump by more than 2.8 million votes. Bernie Sanders for president instead of Clinton, but that was ruled improper. An effort by anti-Trump forces to persuade Republican electors to abandon the president-elect came to practically nothing and the process unfolded largely according to its traditions. “Never had a doubt”.
Hundreds of protesters took part in rallies, held in particular in Washington and Los Angeles, ahead of the Electoral College vote.
This year those electors will include Wisconsin Republican Party Chairman Brad Courtney. Six of the seven were Republicans.
“Even in states where there’s a law mandating they vote for who the state voted for, we don’t know what higher courts would do if that were challenged”, Caliendo says. Peter Chiafalo, co-founder of a movement called the Hamilton Electors, planned to cast his ballot for someone else in a last-ditch effort to thwart a Trump presidency.
There is no constitutional provision or federal law that requires electors to vote for the candidate who won their state.
Cox noted that the Electoral College vote doesn’t normally attract this much attention, but thanked the protesters for their passion and participation all the same.
Then, on the afternoon of January 6, Vice President Joe Biden will open the electoral votes before a joint session of the new Congress, where they will be counted.
