Remembering Debbie Reynolds and Her Massive Collection of Hollywood Costumes
“Admittedly, I found it hard to share my mother with her adoring fans, who treated her like she was part of their family”.
On Tuesday Reynolds posted a statement about her daughter’s death on Facebook: “Thank you to everyone who has embraced the gifts and talents of my beloved and awesome daughter”.
“She was an incredibly strong person, but I told someone the other day after Carrie died, that it was going to really hurt her”.
In his eulogy for Fisher, Lennon called her “one of the best and closest friends I’ve ever had in my life” and thanked her profusely for the advice she had given him over the years.
Fisher, who originally shot to fame playing Princess Leia in the Star Wars films, blamed their fall out on not wanting to live in her famous mother’s shadow. His mother had also said that she missed her daughter and wanted to be with her.
“She was just a wonderful, kind lady”, Lea said. Pictured (From left) Carrie Fisher, Debbie Reynolds and Lourd during the 21st Annual Screen Actors Guild Awards on January 25, 2015 in Los Angeles.
“She said, ‘I want to be with Carrie, ‘” Fisher told The Associated Press by phone from Cedars-Sinai Medical Center in Los Angeles, where Reynolds had just died after being rushed there earlier in the day. She received a Golden Globe nomination for Most Promising Newcomer for her work in the MGM musical. Reynolds married twice more. She was 19 in the movie, and danced with no formal training.
In a unusual twist of fate, the complex (but enduringly loving) relationship between the two is the subject of an upcoming HBO documentary set for release next year, Bright Lights: Starring Debbie Reynolds and Carrie Fisher. She was loving, talented, beautiful, unsinkable.
“She was just a sweetheart then, very bubbly”, Lea said.
Beginning with the 1970 Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer auction, Reynolds worked tirelessly to collect and preserve Hollywood memorabilia with an emphasis on its costumes at the time when few in Hollywood cared about preservation.
Reynolds began her own acting career in the 1940s. “What advice did she give you when you were starting acting?”
