Debbie Reynolds Said She Wanted ‘to Be with Carrie’
In her memoir, Reynolds revealed she previously had a mini-stroke and partial kidney failure.
Family sources told TMZ Reynolds died at a Los Angeles hospital of a stroke, hours after 911 was called to the home of her son, Todd Fisher. In an interview with 20/20 set to air Friday night, Fisher added of his mother’s death, “She didn’t die of a broken heart”. The daughter of Reynolds and singer Eddie Fisher, Carrie’s creative contributions spanned from her unparalleled work in the Star Wars universe to her equally impactful status as an in-demand screenwriter and author.
Reynolds and her daughter reportedly had a happy, close relationship, despite a decade of being estranged during the years Fisher was battling a drug addiction.
“I remember she just sat there for the whole performance”.
Fisher and Reynolds were neighbors, living next door to each other in the same Hollywood compound. According to Variety, Fisher wanted to make the film specifically to preserve her mother’s legacy in Hollywood. “She has led two lives, public and private, sometimes concurrently, sometimes not”.
Fisher said he was sitting with his mother when she died, and that it seemed like she just closed her eyes and went to sleep. “She didn’t want to leave Carrie and did not want to her to be alone”.
In 2013, she released an autobiography, Unsinkable: A Memoir, which detailed her rollercoaster personal life. “This has always been my greatest fear”, Reynolds wrote. This week, the world has lost both mother and daughter. I don’t know if I could survive that.
Brian Elias, chief of operations at the coroner’s office, said an “examination” of her body had been completed.
Fisher, who is now planning what he confirmed to ABC News will be a double funeral, is Debbie Reynolds’s youngest child and only son.
