Chip Kelly fired by 49ers after 2-14 season

Chip was hired by the 49ers in 2016 after being fired by the Eagles at the end of last season.

►San Diego fired Mike McCoy on Sunday, leaving this symmetrical footnote: McCoy was 27-37 in four regular seasons, and the Chargers lost his coaching finale to Kansas City, 37-27.

Will Chip Kelly return to the college game? He’ll have to pay another coach a hefty sum to take on his reclamation project in one of the NFL’s most volatile front office atmospheres.

Monday, York refused to admit that he made a mistake in firing Jim Harbaugh at the end of the 2014 season, that he woefully overestimated Jim Tomsula, who seemed closer to a man who won a contest than a viable National Football League head coach, and that he made the wrong choice in maintaining Trent Baalke after the 2015 season, when he brought in Chip Kelly to be Tomsula’s successor. He will also likley need to relinquish some of the precious control and power he had while Baalke did his bidding.

Health concerns were apparently behind his decision to step down.

The firings reportedly won’t happen until after Sunday’s Seahawks-49ers game.

The 49ers had plenty of uncertainty at the position.

Baalke’s success as a GM with the 49ers, it’s now clear, was dependent on how Jim Harbaugh molded and improved the players Baalke gave him. But a legitimate, bonafide, brand-spanking-new direction. He said the new general manager and new head coach will make the final decisions on who’s here and who’s not.

The only satisfactory answer would be a much, much better team than the 49ers have had since Harbaugh left. Baalke won a power struggle with Harbaugh, who headed to MI.

Will mystery-GM be able to draft a wide receiver? Those are things that, being a veteran players … Why did owner Jed York run him out of the door in 2014? “I will forever be grateful for his dedication to the 49ers”, York said. There are some currenrt openings in San Deigo and Denver, with more possible in the coming days as the Coaching Carousel begins to turn.

Baalke’s leash was long. Harbaugh led the Niners to a 13-3 record his first season, taking San Francisco all the way to the NFC Championship game. He did not name names but he said there’s enough people he trusts and respect from whom he is seeking advice. He told the Associated Press that despite the losing season, this season hasn’t been particularly challenging. The Rams are looking at interim Jaguars coach Doug Marrone and a number of coordinators including Matt Patricia, McDaniels’ defensive counterpart with the Patriots.

First of all, for the record, I never wanted Chip Kelly.
