President Obama to Give Jan. 10 Farewell Address in Chicago
In a series of self-congratulatory New Year’s Day tweets, President Obama listed the ways he feels his administration accomplished its goals.
Obama returned to Washington on Monday from Hawaii.
However, the bulk of the president’s speech will likely be a last-ditch effort to outline (again) the legacy components he doesn’t want President-elect Donald Trump to dismantle.
President Obama is expected to transfer additional detainees from the Guantanamo Bay military prison in his final days in office, despite objections from President-elect Donald Trump.
President Obama also used his weekly address to recap his accomplishments of the last eight years, running through a checklist similar to his tweetstorm, to drive home the successes of his administration and put its failures in the rearview. On average, only 21 percent of Democrats have confidence in the newly elected president’s ability to handle the responsibilities of his job, compared to the roughly 67 percent of Republican voters who expressed some level of confidence in Obama at the time he began his administration. But the transition hasn’t been without incident. He answered that Obama has confidence in the intelligence community, military, and State Department, but never mentioned Trump. Trump will “have an opportunity to implement the policy that he believes is most effective when he takes office on January 20”, he added.
“He’ll be the Democratic statesman in the way everyone loves Bill Clinton, but people will listen to Barack Obama’s direction”, Ferson said.
Sasha Obama says it’s “a chance to say thank you for this unbelievable journey”. For Obama, helping Americans understand how his two terms have reshaped American life is even more critical amid concerns that Trump may undo much of what he accomplished, including the health law.
Trump also intends to have a shorter inauguration.
Obama will give his parting words on Tuesday Jan. 10, so be sure to mark your calendars for what is sure to be a bittersweet goodbye.
And while that doesn’t seem like a long time, there are still a few things left Obama can accomplish before he goes back to being a private citizen.
The Obamas already plan to stay in D.C. well after they leave the White House later this month so youngest daughter Sasha can finish high school. “We have one truck on the south lawn that belongs to the outgoing president and First Family facing south, and the incoming truck facing north toward the White House on the east side of the south grounds”.
