Train Derailment in Brooklyn; Dozens Injured
The fire department says 37 people are being treated for non-life-threatening injuries. The train originated at Far Rockaway and had 600 to 700 passengers, officials said.
Governor of New York Andrew Cuomo inspected the scene of the crash. Eleven people were killed and more than 100 injured. That time the first three cars came off the tracks, injuring 33.
Cuomo said the train hit the track’s bumping block.
Passengers said the blood and chaos following the derailment was frightening. “People crying, screaming, then it started smoking”, said another witness.
“I saw a woman pinned under concrete”, Shah continued.
The train hopped the platform, smashing its windows and doors against the platform ground where commuters were jammed in waiting to board for their morning commute to work. “Everyone in the train just went flying”. People were thrown everywhere. Other services at Jamaica Station and Babylon Station were also affected because of passengers with unspecified medical problems arriving there, the Metropolitan Transport Authority said.
An investigation into that incident, in which the train entered the station at an unusually high speed, is ongoing. He said the train hit the block “at a fairly low rate of speed”. Its reach stretches 120 miles from Montauk on Long Island’s eastern tip to Penn Station in Manhattan, and Atlantic Terminal in Brooklyn.
October 5, 2016: A CSX freight train derailed in the Bronx, disrupting Amtrak service. The worst injury at this time is a possible broken leg, Gov. Cuomo said at a press conference. “But there was extensive damage in Hoboken and that train was coming in much faster, did much more damage, hurt many more people”.
