At Least Five Dead In Shooting At Florida Airport, Gunman In Custody
The Port Authority said officers with “heavy tactical weapons” will be patrolling the three major airports in the New York City area.
On Friday, police responded to a shooting at Fort Lauderdale-Hollywood International Airport where NBC News reports someone opened fire. The shooting took place in a baggage claim area of the airport. Police have a suspect in custody.
Israel said SWAT teams were moving through the entire facility to make sure it was safe. All flight operations in Fort Lauderdale were shut down until further notice, according to the airport’s director.
Eight people were also injured and were taken to local hospitals, Sheriff Scott Israel said on Twitter. “He did not say a word”.
A witness told the outlet that he had been standing in baggage claim when Santiago walked in and started randomly blasting – striking several people in the head.
“At this point there is no second active shooter“.
Schlicher said his wife gave first aid to someone who had been shot in the head and his mother-in-law used her sweater to tend to another victim but it turned out that person was already dead.

Another passenger, Gene Messina, tells CNN he had just disembarked the plane when the chaos began. Witnesses said the gunman appeared calm as he was shooting.
Another scare occurred a short time ago, as police continued to sweep the airport, and shots were heard fired in a parking garage. Police are running around and taking a defensive positions with guns drawn, yelling for people still in the airport to “get down”.
Just before 3 p.m. Broward Sheriff’s deputies were seen at the airport, guns drawn, as travelers on the tarmac were seen sporadically running around away from a certain area.
Florida Governor Rick Scott wrote on social media, “I am on my way to Fort Lauderdale International Airport to be briefed by law enforcement”.
Federal Aviation Administration officials said the south side of the airport is operating but not the north side – where the incident happened.
