Vance Joseph thinks he’s in a better place than most new coaches
Joseph attended the University of Colorado where he played quarterback and running back for the Buffaloes.
Denver is also expected to make a run at Falcons offensive coordinator Kyle Shanahan, one of the hottest candidates available, whose father, Mike, coached the Broncos to two Super Bowl wins.
Joseph also got the thumbs up from Broncos general manager John Elway on Tuesday. If Joseph accepts the deal, half the teams that interviewed Shanahan will be gone.
Joseph was scheduled to interview with the San Diego Chargers on Wednesday and the San Francisco 49ers, but that would appear to probably be off the table.
The deal is reportedly for four years, per Adam Schefter of ESPN. The Broncos have always been impressed with Joseph, having offered their defensive coordinator’s position to him two years ago after discussing the head coaching position.
The Denver Broncos have found a new head coach. I think in today’s world when dealing with players, it’s a different game now than it used to be. “It’s just important, if not more important to get better on defense than it is to get better offensively. I’m going to enhance that standard”.
Joseph coached collegiately from 199 through 2004.
Another former Bengals assistant is now in line to become the next defensive coordinator of the Dolphins. A lot has been made about Miami’s struggles on that side of the ball in 2016. The defense was still good in 2016, but it definitely took a step back from the elite unit it was in 2015. The LA native was said to be a big part of Miami’s turnaround from a 6-10 record in 2015 to a 10-6 record and a first playoff appearance since the 2008 season. “Coming here, they’re used to winning”.
Joseph has just one year of experience as a coordinator in the NFL. In 2014 and 2015, the Bengals led the National Football League with 41 interceptions as Joseph worked with the defensive backs. A Joseph-Phillips-McCoy trio could be a strong play for a team that should be back in the playoff hunt without drastic changes.
