Rams go bold, hire Sean McVay as head coach
At 30 years old, McVay -who has been the offensive coordinator for the Washington Redskins for three years- is the youngest person to lead an National Football League team.
However, as good as the hire sounds on paper, like Tomlin and Gase, McVay will only be as good as his assistant coaches. In three years running the offense, Washington averaged 371.9 yards per game, fifth-most in the NFL. The loss dropped the Rams to 4-9 on their way to a 10th consecutive losing season at 4-12.
In 1962, the Rams named Harland Svare as their head coach halfway through the season.
McVay spent the previous three seasons as Washington’s offensive coordinator and now is charged with the revitalization of a team that hasn’t made the playoffs since 2004, McVay’s freshman year at college.
The Redskins offense ranked No. 3 in yards last season.
During the 2015 season, Cousins and Reed both were among the best players at their positions in the NFL. If tight ends coach Wes Phillips doesn’t head to Los Angeles with McVay, he’ll be a top candidate, as will offensive line coach Bill Callahan and quarterbacks coach Matt Cavanaugh, each of whom have experience as an offensive coordinator.
The elder McVay and Walsh worked together to build one of the strongest dynasties in National Football League history.
One year after they relocated, the Rams have moved again, this time toward youth.
Much of the appeal for him stems from the success quarterback Kirk Cousins has experienced over the last two seasons with him as the play caller in Washington.
It appears that McVay has already taken preliminary steps toward assembling a staff. The defense is stronger, and Adam Schefter reported on Thursday that McVay will try to recruit veteran defensive coordinator Wade Phillips to lead that unit.
If the Redskins want to look externally, former San Diego Chargers Coach Mike McCoy would be an intriguing candidate. Although five or six years older, Tomlin had just one season as defensive coordinator under his belt and five years as a position coach in the NFL.
