Buffalo Bills name Sean McDermott their new head coach
The contract is expected to cover five years, the same length the Bills gave Ryan in 2015.
McDermott has been Carolina’s defensive coordinator since 2011, and he has coached some of the best defenses in the NFL.
McDermott could always look to draft his own guy on the front seven, and have a young guy he can personally mold and grow with in Buffalo.
The Bills finished 7-9 in 2016, missing the postseason for the 17th consecutive season.
In 2015, McDermott led a Panthers defense that ranked sixth in the National Football League in both points against and yards allowed en route to representing the NFC in the Super Bowl. As opposed to the more run-defense oriented Bryant, Washington has interior pass rush ability and can be a valuable 3rd down DT in a 4-3 system.
On Wednesday, the Buffalo Bills became the third team to hire a new head coach this offseason. As the group prepares to head into the off season to start their rebuilding process, the team will have to do so without one of their key minds: Sean McDermott. When the Bills’ defense was a top 5 unit in 2014, it operated in a 4-3 scheme. His defenses are relentless and physical. Carolina was still playing those basic zone defenses, but with two smart, ball-hawking linebackers, they could mix things up a little more.
5 – Bills were best job on the marketNot only did Terry Pegula say that McDermott was the leading candidate for the job from day one, but McDermott said that Buffalo was the best job on the market. I have been a part of building defense brick by brick.
If they were going to bring him back, no matter, he would have played against the Jets and dramatically enhanced Buffalo’s chance for victory. However, McDermott could conceivably have no wish to include him on his coaching staff.
Clearly he came into his second interview knowing that Whaley was strongly rumored to have not gotten along with Buffalo’s last two head coaches, Doug Marrone and Ryan.
He previously spent 12 seasons in Philadelphia, and was an assistant on the Eagles team that lost the 2005 Super Bowl to New England. The both know defensive personnel, but will have to be even more focused on getting this team a franchise quarterback.
I’ve always felt Lawson was more suited to play 4-3 DE in the National Football League than 3-4 OLB where Rex Ryan had him lined up. Who knows, maybe new coach Sean McDermott sees something in Taylor, and will push for him to stick around. He plays to his players’ strengths and makes adjustments to mask their weaknesses.
“I’m going to go through and be diligent with this evaluation or the roster, along with Doug [Whaley, the GM], and doing this the right way”, McDermott said. It’s like the game of chess.
