‘Dude, just stop:’ Rep. Justin Amash tweets at Trump
It was the latest Twitter war launched by the incoming president, who has continued to tweet out attacks against his critics. But Mr. Trump, you need to think carefully about disparaging a Civil Rights icon such as John Lewis, let alone anyone exercising their freedom of expression that many of us fought for.
By delegitimizing Trump’s presidency, Rep. Lewis likely knows he is putting himself in a very scary and unpredictable line of fire. “I think there was a conspiracy on the part of the Russians and others that helped him get elected”.
There is no reason to treat John Lewis with kid gloves, and Donald Trump doesn’t do so.
Krauthammer said that Lewis and Trump have created a dynamic that “undermines the majesty” of what’s supposed to happen on inauguration day. This will be the first presidential inauguration he misses since he began serving in Congress three decades ago.
Trump responded by blasting Lewis on Twitter saying, “The Georgia Congressman should spend more time on fixing and helping his district” which Trump called “crime infested”.
The reason behind it: Georgia Congressman John Lewis.
JOHN LEWIS: No. I believe forgiveness.
While Lewis didn’t cite allegations of bigotry and racism made against Trump, the whole thing can’t help but hearken back to Trump’s own questioning of the legitimacy of his predecessor, Barack Obama.
“It’s going to be very hard”, Lewis said.
The exchange sparked a new verbal slugfest between the president-elect and a prominent Democrat on the eve of an inauguration. Almost 50 years ago, Lewis suffered a skull fracture during the march in Selma, Alabama and has devoted his life to promoting equal rights for African-Americans.
Lewis, speaking at a breakfast honoring King in Miami, did not directly address Trump but urged people to “not be quiet” when confronted with injustice.
No other Maryland Democrat has said they will skip the event. Luis Gutiérrez from Illinois; Katherine Clark from Massachusetts; Barbara Lee, Mark DeSaulnier, and Jared Huffman from California; and Raúl Grijalva from Arizona.
