Contentious confirmation hearing: Betsy Devos on the hot seat
Devos, a billionaire, is known for her strong support of charter schools and school voucher programs.
“For Mrs DeVos to try to explain away these donations by claiming that her title was simply a “clerical error” is concerning, to say the least”. I just want to play that exchange for people.
“I oppose #DeVos b/c we need a Secretary of Education who actually supports public schools – hasn’t worked to dismantle them”, Blumenthal tweeted.
Alexander himself faced criticism from fellow senators for rules he implemented before the hearing, to which he said that DeVos spent 90 minutes longer in front of the committee than any of President Barack Obama’s nominees.
” I think probably there, I would imagine there is probably a gun in a school to protect from potential grizzlies”, she said. Additionally, her lack of support for holding all schools receiving federal funds accountable only serves to reinforce our conclusion that her inadequate experience and missing record of support for students’ civil rights make her unfit to serve as Secretary of Education.
The rally is being held by the grassroots organization, The Southern Tier Advocates for Public Education, made up of educators, SRPs, parents, community members, and students. “But in order to argue for vouchers, you have to say this system is not working at all”.
And even though teachers unions have painted DeVos as a public school hater, DeVos talked about her work mentoring students at Grand Rapids Public Schools. “I think it’s important that the person in charge of a financial aid program understands what it’s like for students and their families who are struggling to pay for college”.
DeVos did express sympathy to those affected by gun violence.
“I absolutely believe she believes in improving public education”, he said.
“It is the very definition of a hot seat”.
Mrs. DeVos joined our cause in OH to create a voucher program to allow parents to send their kids to private schools that do a better job of educating special needs students.
Only Betsy DeVos’ name was removed from the Prince Foundation’s board of directors in the filings sent last week to the Michigan Department of Licensing and Regulatory Affairs.
In fact, Wyoming bans guns from all public schools, as Emma Brown of The Washington Post revealed Wednesday.
DeVos said she’s never believed in it. “She has a steep learning curve to get proficient on these complex issues”.
The former senator “introduced” DeVos to the committee, along with Sen. But DeVos has spent almost 30 years fighting teacher unions and other special interests that oppose accountability efforts that could more accurately measure students’ academic progress – their strengths and weaknesses – and improve teacher performance evaluations.
