Jimmy Fallon Gives Special Tribute to Mary Tyler Moore
After working with the actress on The Dick Van Dyke Show, Dick sought to express his emotions about the loss of his co-star and friend.
“She had kind of a mid-Atlantic accent – kind of a Katherine Hepburn”.
“I don’t know what made her comic timing so great”. She had us all laughing after a couple of episodes.
Several other TV stations will also pay tribute to the actor, who could “turn the world on with her smile”. “It was just very natural for her”. “We could nearly reach each other’s mind”.
“We thought we were the best dance team since (Fred) Astaire and (Ginger) Rogers”, Van Dyke said.
Over the course of her career, she also won a Tony, three Golden Globes and a SAG lifetime achievement award, and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” was the recipient of a Peabody. “The Dick Van Dyke Show” and “The Mary Tyler Moore Show” – combined for six seasons in Nielsen’s top-10. sometimes joined by other shows (“Rhoda”, “Phyllis”, etc.) from her MTM company. Moore was on the show for its entirety from 1961-1966, launching her into stardom and earning wins at the Emmys Golden Globes.
There had never been a divorced main character in a TV show and in many quarters of the culture it still seemed important to portray divorce as something of a sin, or just to avoid discussing it.
“It was an incredible event, and the celebrity factor was wonderful”, he said.
Even after their on-screen collaboration ended, the two’s friendship lived on.
Matt Sharp of Weezer, who famously name-checked Mary Tyler Moore in their song “Buddy Holly”, recalled a “sweet” message they received from the late actress.
TMZ reported earlier Wednesday that Moore was in “grave condition” at a CT hospital and that her family was gathering “to say goodbye”. “Thank you for being a Light that shined so brightly, it let me see myself in you”. “It was so sad. She was the one”, she added.
Then, Rose moved the conversation toward Van Dyke’s good health and exuberance.
“And so it was kind of a natural thing, but they were the first to do it”, Silver said of the show’s creators. “And I went into double, triple overtime”.
