United Nations refugee agency hopes resettlement resumes soon to US
The order, which was made in an effort to improve national security, also left refugee resettlement agencies wondering what was left of their mission. The State Department said the three-month ban in the directive applied to Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen – all Muslim-majority nations. Those countries have a 90-day travel ban. We are smart people.
Of course, the long-term consequences of the executive orders can not be determined only a few days after being signed. It calls for the secretary of homeland security to propose a way to make their involvement routine. They themselves are fleeing war, persecution, oppression and terrorism.
The IRC is one of eight NGOs contracted to assist refugees who arrive in the U.S. via the resettlement programme. Not to mention it reduces the refugee admittance quota for the 2017 fiscal year from 110,000 to 50,000.
What does it mean for refugee acceptance?
A refugee has the right not to be punished for illegal entry into the territory of a country that has signed the treaties. However, it applies only when a refugee is within a signatory country’s territory or jurisdiction.
The United States is a signatory to the Hague Convention, “and it requires signatories to accept refugees”, said Wilfredo Allen, a Miami immigration attorney.

For many decades the U.S. has devoted more attention and resources to the refugee issue than any other country. “We trust that this support will continue and that the recent measures will prove to be temporary”.
But this already exists for resettled refugees. Syrians were subject to additional, classified controls that administration officials at the time declined to describe, and processing for that group routinely took years to complete. And they asked why the implementation of the Declaration had been delayed for two years, when the needs of refugees are so great and so urgent.
Actions over the past year have restricted entry to refugees and migrants. None of them were Syrian.
With the Muslim ban, Trumps fallacious, anti-Muslim rhetoric has been actualized. “The suspension of the refugee program may affect these Cuban doctors”. Jordan hosts considerable USA military hardware and personnel, serving as a critical base for US air operations against the Islamic State in Syria.
But in a phone call between Trump and Turnbull on Sunday, Trump appears to have given assurances the deal would still go ahead.

Either way, both countries have agreed to adhere to the treaties which not only defines what a refugee is but also spells out the provisions of signatory countries. In Iraq, the World Food Programme (another important recipient of U.S. funds) has been obliged to halve the food rations provided to 1.4 million displaced people.
“I’m going to die here”, said Hamid, a 36-year-old gay man who fled his home in northern Iran in 2014 and was referred to the US for resettlement in August 2016.
