Kyle Shanahan named San Francisco 49ers head coach
But most of us will ultimately remember what he didn’t do last night: win his first Super Bowl.
The San Francisco 49ers officially hired Kyle Shanahan as their next head coach, the team announced Monday. They waded through celebrating Patriots fans who hooted and hollered, many stunned to see members of one of the team’s coaching staffs walking outside the beer and hotdog stands. Shanahan, 37, is expected to sign a six-year deal to run concurrent with Lynch’s contract.
The 49ers fired Kelly on January 1 and first interviewed Shanahan on January 6 while the Falcons were enjoying a bye week for wild-card weekend. Shanahan is essentially walking into an empty building in Santa Clara.
But Shanahan will leave Atlanta with criticism following him. Matt Ryan won the MVP award, new weapons emerged like Austin Hooper and Taylor Gabriel and the Falcons statistically had a top 10 offense of all-time. It never came. So they were told to walk down a flight.
Can anyone explain to me what the hell happened on Super Bowl Sunday?
“You look at everything”, Shanahan said, according to Denver’s 9News.com. The last two Super Bowl scapegoats – Pete Carroll play call against New England and Cam Newton’s effort against Denver – have not returned to glory yet.
But Warner’s comments came before Ryan and the Falcons watched a 25-point second-half lead disappear in the Super Bowl, and prior to the game Warner, an analyst for the NFL Network and a newly elected member of the Pro Football Hall of Fame, raised an interesting potential comparison. When went three-and-out two times, which was huge. Another run, for minus-1 yard, was nullified by a holding penalty. “We got into field-goal range, where we would’ve ended it”.
Center Alex Mack said about the fourth-quarter sack: “That hurt, yeah”. “I think it’s tough for everybody”.
“The thought was get as many yards as you can”, he said. The play-calling can not put it into a deep drop.
Welcome to the greatest magic trick in Super Bowl history. That was bad enough, but Shanahan later topped it when he called a pass play on second-and-11 from the Patriots 23 with 3:56 on the clock. “I care about 20 years from now when we look back, what did we do together, what did we accomplish over that period of time”.
Schaub is scheduled to be an unrestricted free agent and, with Washington preparing to place its franchise tag on quarterback Kirk Cousins, Shanahan might have to settle for pursuing Atlanta’s backup quarterback rather than the Redskins’ starting quarterback.
Shanahan has been an offensive coordinator in the National Football League since 2008, working with the Houston Texans, Washington and Cleveland Browns before his most recent gig with the Falcons for the previous two years.
Now, after securing his first head-coaching gig, Shanahan will have his own spotlight to truly separate himself from his father.
Shanahan was not able to accept a contract offer from the 49ers until after the Falcons, but the OC will have one in front of him very soon. That search that included sitdowns with candidates who became coaches elsewhere: Anthony Lynn (Los Angeles Chargers) Sean McVay (Los Angeles Rams) and Sean McDermott (Buffalo Bills).
So, you want to be an offensive coordinator?
