President Trump defends ‘wonderful’ Flynn who was ‘treated unfairly’
White House press secretary Sean Spicer was asked by ABC News’ Jonathan Karl during Tuesday’s press briefing if Trump’s campaign, including former national security adviser Lt. Gen. Mike Flynn, had any contact with Russian Federation.
As Democrats and some Republicans found a common cause in putting him in the dock over his administration’s eagerness to warm up to Russia, Mr. Trump responded through a series of tweets on Wednesday, naming Washington Post, New York Times, CNN and MSNBC by name.
Flynn’s departure less than one month into the Trump administration marks an extraordinarily early shakeup in the president’s senior team of advisers.
To their credit, some Republicans of standing have come forward to say an investigation regarding Trump and Russian Federation is needed.
Trump was scheduled to hold a news conference at noon Wednesday with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, who is visiting the White House.
President Trump’s disgraced former national security adviser, Michael Flynn, will no longer have access to classified material after having his security clearance suspended.
It’ll be really hard for Donald Trump to distance himself from Russian Federation with all the reports coming in that detail his friendliness to one of America’s biggest adversaries. Spicer said Trump and others in the administration had been “reviewing and evaluating this issue on a daily basis trying to ascertain the truth”.
This was followed by a second tweet criticising the leaking of the information.
The White House has not commented on the report, though officials denied as recently as Tuesday afternoon that campaign advisers had communicated with Russian Federation during the election.
Democrats demanded Wednesday that an independent special counsel be appointed to probe the Trump White House and potential ties to Russian Federation, saying Attorney General Jeff Sessions is too tainted to oversee the investigation.
USA president Donald Trump condemned a New York Times and CNN report claiming that senior Trump administration officials had been in frequent contact with Russian intelligence officials during the U.S. presidential election, describing the report as “nonsense”.
Officials said Flynn apologised to Pence twice, including in person on Friday. The report also suggests Flynn had misled Pence. Mr. Flynn previously had denied that he had any substantive conversations with Ambassador Sergey I. Kislyak, and Mr. Pence repeated that claim in television interviews as recently as earlier this month.
The resignation of National Security Advisor Michael Flynn – former director of the Defense Intelligence Agency and a decorated Army lieutenant general – after just 24 days in office should be setting off alarm bells.
Spicer said Trump asked for Flynn’s resignation after it became clear the president couldn’t trust him.
The good news is that suddenly we have the media widely asking the old Watergate question about what the president knew and when.
“I have sincerely apologised to the President and the Vice President, and they have accepted my apology”, Mr Flynn said.
Senators from both sides of the aisle are expressing concern over reports that Donald Trump’s campaign had contact with potential Russian operatives – arguing this is further proof why thorough investigations are necessary.
Flynn maintains that no lines were crossed in his conversations with Russian Federation.
The officials and others with knowledge of the situation were not authorized to discuss the matter publicly and requested anonymity.
Mr. Flynn, who served in the job for less than a month, stepped down following days of reports that he had spoken to the ambassador about American sanctions against Russian Federation in late December, weeks before Mr. Trump’s inauguration.
Apparently, the communications were intercepted during routine intelligence collection operations targeting Russian officials and other nationals.
Writing in Politico, he said.
