Lawmakers address concerns over future of health insurance
Aetna Inc. Chief Executive Officer Mark Bertolini escalated his criticism of the Affordable Care Act, saying Obamacare’s markets are nearing failure as premiums climb and healthier individuals drop out.
Rep. Mike Coffman has taken a lot of grief for not meeting with constituents concerned about the repeal of the Affordable Care Act. Along with the Affordable Care Act, the Health Care and Education Reconciliation Act of 2010 was passed by the House of Representatives on March 21, 2010.
The Republican majority in Congress, as well as President Trump, have all repeatedly vowed to repeal the ACA as quickly as possible.

Bertolini said his company has not decided yet whether or not to continue selling insurance in the exchanges in 2018, but the company already dramatically exited most of the markets where it previously sold plans, remaining in only four states this year. Some have speculated the the ad removal – in addition to repeated promises to repeal the health care law – contributed to lower-than-projected enrollment number for 2017.
This proposed change would require individuals to submit supporting documentation, a common practice in the employer health insurance market, CMS said.
The agency had planned to reject tax returns of people who didn’t say whether they had health insurance during the tax year.
Rebecca Heintz, general counsel for Blue Cross Blue Shield of Vermont, said the provision in the ACA allowing young adults to sign up for their parents’ insurance through age 26 was not likely to be repealed because “everyone loves that” and “it doesn’t even have an impact on premiums”. Rather, there were “further signs of an unbalanced risk pool”, as customers with expensive medical conditions continued to enroll as compared with healthy people. Since speaking to NC Health News on February 7, Congress has approved Georgia Rep. Tom Price as the Secretary of Health and Human Services.
The rule could take affect as soon as next month.
