Days after Verizon announcement, AT&T announces new unlimited plan

Well, clearly the carriers have sorted it out and can make money now, or else unlimited plans wouldn’t be back.

But, AT&T doesn’t seem as interested in playing the one-upsmanship game. Fees and taxes add about $5 per line.

The plan sounds very similar to an AT&T plan that offered unlimited data for DirecTV and U-verse customers. “You can turn it off once and it stays off”, an AT&T spokesperson told Ars Technica.

AT&T’s plan isn’t without caveats. Now while they all offer “unlimited data”, that doesn’t mean that it is truly unlimited. Coverage aside, the main differences are in price, streaming video quality, and hotspot availability, all things to consider if you’re trying to decide to switch plans or companies. But this is only on the newer shared data plans.

The Verizon plan costs users $80 a month for a single line or $180 for four lines with unlimited data, talk and texting. The unlimited plan also includes the Stream Saver feature, which downgrades video to 480p. This is especially important if you are on the old AT&T unlimited data plan that you can not switch back to.

These new unlimited plans not only can save families big bucks, they also can give data-obsessed customers more for their money. Each carrier has a set point where they may throttle your speed for “Network Management”. Data deprioritization during congestion. Customers will get unlimited talk, text, data and mobile hotspot with the plan and will have to use autopay as well. Additional charges will be required to pay to tether one’s phone connection to another device. If you use your phone to connect your laptop or tablets to the Internet, you will lose that feature.

AT&T is offering more expensive rates for individual consumers compared to Verizon, Sprint and T-Mobile. That feature can be turned on or off at any time, the carrier confirmed. If you have family, friends, and colleagues overseas in selected 120 countries, you can text them for free. Yesterday, AT&T dropped that requirement.

In terms of data, each line will get unlimited LTE data of up to 23GB, after which management will take over. The unlimited plan will be available starting tomorrow. It costs $180 for four lines. After March 31, 2018 you will have to pay $60/month for the first line, $40 for the next two line and $30 for line 3 and line 4. T-Mobile, Verizon and AT&T’s prices are their normal price.

Is AT&T unlimited data worth it? There is a 22GB cap of data usage.

Right off the bat, Sprint and AT&T are going to be out for most people.

On a speed basis, T-Mobile and Verizon shared the honors, with Verizon tops in the Midwest and the West and T-Mobile winning the Northeast and Southeast.
