Trump’s Attacks on News Media Provoke Backlash
As seven congressional committees line up to investigate Donald Trump for the Russian Federation scandal, the President Of The United States as declared the media to be the enemy of the American people.
More recently, during his presidential campaign in 2000, George W Bush was overheard describing a New York Times reporter as a “major league asshole”. We have to find out what’s going on because the press, honestly, is out of control.
On Thursday, he launched into a long diatribe at a grievance-filled news conference, in which he blamed the media for his one-month-old administration’s problems.
Trump backed down after the question and said that someone had given him the information.
The email was likely targeted at Trump’s base – stirring up his tried-and-true “crooked media” narrative, especially amid chaos in his nascent presidency – and Trump critics were thrilled to comply, gleefully sharing a link to the online poll. If the administration and GOP believe their supporters trust President Trump’s tweets more than the reporting of seasoned journalists, it arguably could influence decisions to squelch press access.
“You know what they said”. I don’t know. But they don’t believe you…
Trump has already made it repeatedly clear how he feels about the media – and now, more than ever, he’s taken a strong stance against many news outlets.
While Trump’s latest statement represents a unsafe escalation of his anti-news media rhetoric, it’s not altogether surprising considering his penchant for deeming articles critical of him as “fake news”. Modern press should use more discretion in handling certain stories from D.C.to determine when something really is worthy of another eye-catching, hair-raising proclamation, or if it should just be another generic update in the news section. “But I see no evidence that anybody is putting forward any kind of legislation to limit the press”.
“The press – the public doesn’t believe you people anymore”.
Trump attacked the media again Saturday during a rally in Melbourne, Fla., saying that the media is dishonest and “has published one false story after another, with no sources, even though they pretend they have them”.
Fox News’ Howard Kurtz argues that Americans saw a “quintessential” and “passionate” Donald Trump, who controlled the situation. “Those who oppose this president thought he seemed somewhat crazed-unhinged”, Kurtz wrote.
Asked about the latest salvo, White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus told CBS’s “Face the Nation” program, “I think you should take (Trump’s Twitter statement) seriously”.
Lawmakers of both parties routinely complain about news coverage, but defend a free press.
The press, for watching your mission get way tougher in the space of one news conference and one tweet, you had the Worst Week in Washington.
