Westbrook, Durant connect for alley-oop just like old times
Was there anything else to get excited about? “Because it’s been a lot of stuff said about him”.
Hometown hero Anthony Davis was the game’s MVP, blowing past Wilt Chamberlain’s all-star game scoring record of 42 with a 52-point night of his own. And throughout the 45-minute ordeal, Durant and Westbrook stood on opposite sides of the court.
Certainly, the Warriors have not displayed the regular-season dominance they flaunted last season in setting the National Basketball Association record with 73 wins, but after making the blockbuster acquisition of Durant from Oklahoma City in free agency last season and road-testing their new 12-cylinder engine in November and December, they are beginning to look unstoppable.
As recently as Wednesday, a reporter asked Westbrook what he anticipated would happen with Durant this weekend.
During it’s All-Star Saturday coverage, TNT’s coverage averaged 5,627,000 total viewers, a one percent increase from 2016.
Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook still aren’t seeing eye to eye. Take Friday, at the first media availability of the weekend. It went in. Stephen Curry launched one from half-court.
It was like that all weekend. There are private moments in the locker room.
Neither of them was willing to talk about it, and Kerr wouldn’t divulge whether he would play them together. The next thing we need is Celine Dion singing “My Heart Will Go On” dubbed over the alley-oop and bench celebration to make this even more tailor-made for the internet. But at the end of the day we’re all trying to push our games to the next level and continue to just raise the interest [in] the National Basketball Association as a whole and do special things. “I think our guests are having a great time”.
Others weren’t eager to get involved, either. KD threw a ideal alley-oop to Westbrook who then flushed it down with two hands and publicly acknowledged Durant in a positive way with a point and a smile.
Draymond Green was among those cheering, and afterwards called it “cute”. West coach Steve Kerr played them together for only 82 seconds. Nine months removed from the last time they wore the same jersey, Durant and Westbrook were teammates again.
The result was, well, anticlimactic. He and Durant were teammates with the Thunder from 2009 to 2016.
Westbrook passed to a cutting Durant in the middle of the paint.
And that was it.
Then Durant hung on the rim long enough to microwave a potato. The lob was lovely and it was just like old times, right?
When all is said and done, if Durant gets his championships you’re going to be even more salty. Neither seemed interested in pursuing any new narrative.
And you know what?
So Durant moved on, and their relationship – whatever it was – essentially ended.
Reserves: Isaiah Thomas (Boston), John Wall (Washington), Kevin Love (Cleveland), Kyle Lowry (Toronto), Paul George (Indiana), Kembla Walker (Charlotte), Paul Millsap (Atlanta). But Westbrook won’t seek it. Whether or not Popovich was blowing smoke, as he has been known to do, Golden State once again has everyone’s attention with its ability to answer any questions on a given night. We all know, it’s been going on for years with many different players.
