CT governor to cops: Don’t follow Trump immigration orders
ICE officials have declined to identify the 51 people detained as part of the operation during a four-day period during the second week of February, making it hard to know why the immigrants were arrested and their previous criminal histories, if any. In May 2014, a federal court decision found it unlawful for a sheriff’s department to hold arrestees on ICE detainers.

“This legislation will clarify the use of state resources for federal purposes such as immigration enforcement”, the Legislative Black Caucus of Maryland wrote in testimony supporting the legislation.
But the new directives say if a child is reunited with a parent, that process no longer applies.
The newly obtained records indicate a somewhat different outcome than federal officials had publicly announced, prompting condemnation from some officials and immigration advocates.
The majority of those taken into custody came from Mexico, but the remainder came from 12 other nations.
Although the sheriff’s current policy bars deputies in the jails from extending a person’s detention exclusively so they can be arrested by ICE, it does allow the jails to hand over release date and time information.
ICE agents who visit the jails determine which individuals should be detained for immigration violations.
The Department of Homeland Security said its new directives focus on criminals and those who pose a threat to the USA, but the provisions expand the authority of federal agents to deport the vast majority of the immigrants living in the United States illegally.
“[It is] a highly successful force multiplier that allows a qualified state or local law enforcement officer to be designated as an ‘immigration officer, ‘” the memo reads.
The memos do not change USA immigration laws, but take a far harder line toward enforcement.
As if there weren’t enough justification for anxiety among immigrants – those with documentation or without – President Donald Trump has recently provided fuel for more. “I want to play it forward”, she said.
Part of the memos released mention that federal agents could seek to deport people in the country illegally who were convicted of any crime, no matter how minor.
Salvatore of the Monroe Police Department is president of the Connecticut Police Chiefs Association. “There are so many rumors about ICE enforcement, but we have not seen an uptick in their enforcement in our county”.
Under state law, the requirements are very specific about when state or local police or the Department of Correction can hold someone in custody exclusively based on a request from ICE.
Though created in 1996, the ICE program is not widely used by law enforcement around the country.
Harris County, along with 251 out of 254 Texas counties, has said no to the program. “Such officers have the authority to perform all law enforcement functions… including the authority to investigate, identify, apprehend, arrest, detain, and conduct searchers”. “We have communities who are in fear that ICE is going through the streets and deporting people, and that’s not the case”.
“There is no reason right now to rush into this”, she said.
The protesters urged people not to open doors if they do not know who is on the other side.
