Betsy DeVos ‘Originally Opposed’ Change to School Bathroom Policy on Transgenders
When The New York Times interviewed LGBT friends and former colleagues of DeVos prior to her confirmation, many spoke of her as accepting and supportive. But we’re getting ahead of ourselves.
President Trump on Wednesday rescinded the Obama-era directive, which was presently not enforced due to a nationwide injunction placed on the directive by a federal judge. Judging from the record-breaking turnout during National School Choice Week and by the list of school choice legislation expanding at the state level each day, “they”-meaning the left-wing education establishment-are the only ones who do see government schools as “critical” and “[serving] the majority of students”. “Privatizing education is a threat to democracy”. And by making the rich kids go to school with everyone else, they grow up with those “other kids” as friends, and when they become wealthy adults, they have to think twice before screwing them over”, Moore said. Two Republican senators broke with their party and voted against Ms DeVos. DeVos tried to pass policies that would direct federal funding to private education. She has received a great deal of criticism for herlack of experience in public education, support for funneling taxpayer dollars into privately run schools, failure to study basic education policy concepts, and position as a billionaire donor who backed numerous GOP senators that voted for her. It also said the guidance didn’t undergo any formal process.
DeVos agreed to implement Trump’s anti-trans policy demand this week despite claiming in her confirmation hearing that she would continue existing protections.
The Senator who had a hard start, because of all things bears, explained her stance on education. In fact, the evidence shows that charter schools are more segregated and serve more advantaged students than public schools do.
During DeVos’ hearing on January 17, when asked about equal standards of accountability between schools by Sen. Elizabeth Warren of MA questioned DeVos about her experience with loans. This is unsettling to female college students in particular, who are a part of the 69 percent of all college students that receive federal loans to pay for tuition every year.
“Together we can make American education great again”, she exclaimed at one point during her speech.
Many have also pointed to her past comments that suggest she wants to use the USA education system to advance a Christian agenda and build “God’s kingdom”. Yet, she is listed on tax forms for the foundation, and just recently filed paperwork for her name to be removed from the forms after this speculation.
But it’s also important to be accurate. Partiyeli said he applied for student aid at his community college and at UCLA.
Shahdad Rahimian, a third-year economics student, saidhe is concerned about her flippancy toward weapons in the classroom.
One member of the audience even shouted “I love you!” as the MI billionaire took the stage, a dramatic departure from how DeVos has been received at recent events, including being blocked by protesters from entering a Washington, D.C., middle school.
“We need you to engage, to be loud and to never stop fighting for what we believe”, DeVos said.
