Trump renews attack on media in Conservative conference
This year’s Washington Times CPAC straw poll found that 86 percent of those polled approve of the job Donald Trump is doing as president.
This year, he doesn’t flinch when asked how he feels about the president’s first month in office: “Oh, delighted”.
But Trump returned to CPAC Friday a happy, boastful warrior.
Trump after his election victory has continuously alleged without evidence that voter fraud played a role in him losing the popular vote by about 2.9 million votes. “Let their name be put out there”, Trump said.
How Trump plans to increase defence spending dramatically while cutting taxes and not ballooning the deficit (long a conservative pillar) was not mentioned. The president criticized polls from CBS, ABC, NBC, and the “Clinton News Network” (or CNN), which brought more whoops of delight.
“The GOP will be from now on the party also of the American worker”, said Trump. And we have to fight it, folks, we have to fight it. “I am only against the fake news, media, or press”. But that would be to misunderstand what the appearance meant for the Trump of 2017 – in a different position now from the Trump who snubbed the proceedings in 2016, causing conservatives and populists at the annual conference to take sides. He called it “the disaster known as Obamacare”, to great applause. “Nine people. And I said, ‘Give me a break.’ Because I know the people, I know who they talk to”. “Nobody. It will be one of the greatest military build-ups in American history”.
“We wanted border security”.
Trump pledged the construction of the wall on the U.S. border with Mexico would begin soon, even though it is unclear where the money to pay for it will come from.
“We are in the middle of the ultimate battle of the cultural wars with Donald Trump, and it’s going to go on and on, and it’s going to be scorched earth”. “When informed by the F.B.I. that [the Russia-related reporting] was false, we told reporters who else they should contact to corroborate the F.B.I.’s version of the story”, he said. “They should follow the law”, he said. “They have nine sources.’ They make up sources”, the president said. “They are very dishonest people”, Trump said.
Flynn was sacked after it was revealed that he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials about the content of those conversations.
Referring to a tweet he posted a week ago, in which said the “fake news media”. It’s fake, phony, fake.
His comments, and those of his chief adviser, Stephen Bannon, suggest that he aims to take the Republican Party in a more populist and nationalist direction, and believe that traditional conservatives will be forced to fall in line. They purchased tickets to the conference ahead of Trump’s speech and handed out approximately 1,000 flags.
Last week, National Security Adviser Michael Flynn resigned following reports he misled Vice President Mike Pence and other White House officials about his frequent contacts with Russian Ambassador Sergey Kislyak during the transition period before Trump’s inauguration.
“Most Americans feel like something is wrong here”, Charters said.
“The chief of staff said, well, you’ve put us in a very hard situation”, Spicer said.
He added: “We need their voices at this event now more than ever”.
CNN first reported the development earlier Thursday.
