‘Warren, what did you do?!’: The greatest Oscars gaffe in history
In an unprecedented gaffe, “La La Land” was accidentally awarded the Oscar for best picture before producers realized the award actually belonged to “Moonlight”.
Of course, none of them made it to the stage and started delivering speeches for an Oscar they didn’t win, so “La La Land” still deserves the Oscar for Most Awkward Moment Ever.
‘The presenters had mistakenly been given the wrong category envelope and when discovered, was immediately corrected. They also added that they were now investigating “how this could have happened”.
Producer Jordan Horwitz then graciously passed his statue to the Moonlight producers. Horowitz just got swept up in a insane time, and acted boldly and humbly. “I can help Warren Beatty get through this”.
“I want to tell you what happened”. They also said it seemed like Horowitz was genuinely happy “Moonlight” won.
Warren Beatty then stepped up to the microphone to explain what happened: “I opened the envelope and it said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ That’s why I took such a long look at Faye and at you”. And so he did.
During the 36th Academy Awards, Davis Jr. presented the Oscar for Best Music Score (adaptation or treatment) to John Addison for Tom Jones, when in reality, the Oscar was supposed to go to Andre Previn for Irma La Douce.
This is going to be one moment which will not be forgotten soon and trolls will keep coming.
Oscars host Jimmy Kimmel said afterwards: “He was confused because the card, which he showed to me by the way, said “Emma Stone, La La Land” on it”.
“The Lalaland folks were so gracious, I can’t even imagine being in their position and having to do that”. We spent a lot of time together over the last six months, and I can’t imagine being in their position.
The pair told the outlet that they check each other “multiple times”, so that when they’re handing off the envelopes “we’re very confident they’re getting the right envelopes and the contents in them are accurate”. But making that flub at the end of a ceremony that cost more than million to pull off, in front of more than 34 million people? Having won several of the coveted awards this season, La La Land was the favourite to win the Best Picture Oscar today.
Speaking to reporters backstage, Jenkins said that he and his Moonlight teammates were given “no explanation”-but that he did see the infamous wrong card”.
