San Francisco Chronicle editorial: New immigration guidelines are about cruelty, not safety
Last week, the Trump administration released its blueprint for implementing the president’s executive orders on immigration.
Heidi Segal, vice-president of social action at the Temple of Israel of Hollywood, says the temple will team offering direct refuge and volunteers who will accompany immigrants for deportation interviews.
President Donald Trump’s sweeping crackdown on undocumented immigrants will strain an already tight USA job market, with one study suggesting that removing all of them would cost the economy as much as $5tr over 10 years. They are simply “illegal aliens”, a term that dehumanizes and misrepresents what is essentially a civil violation.
Immigration attorney Royal Berg is among them. Expedited removal leads to people being “ripped from their communities [and] whisked away and deported in a matter of hours, based on shoddy paperwork”, Newell said. And with crackdowns on undocumented immigrants, the return of the travel ban, a presidential visit to a museum honoring the sacrifices of black Americans through history, a revision (i.e., the removal) of guidelines meant to protect transgender kids, and a major chicken joint being sold to America’s third-best burger place, it’s a rough road ahead for us all.
The speech, rescheduled from when it was first supposed to be given on February 9, was rewritten in apparent response to the activists and questions from The Hudson Reporter as to the county’s role in detaining immigrants. Spouses and children walk out of the front door crying as the vigil continues.
ICE agents arrested 10 alleged members of the El Salvador-based gang Mara Salvatrucha, or MS-13, according to the agency, along with 11 other people detained exclusively on immigration charges.
So while Sung is happy that the lawsuits helped reverse Trump’s executive orders and the two Iraqi clients have been reunited with their families here in the United States, “we are still working to protect those who were immediately harmed by the executive orders going into effect”, she said.
This marks the eleventh year for the weekly vigils. “I want to plan how we deal with this”, Spicer said.
There are no hard numbers about the percentage of golf-maintenance workers who are undocumented, but it’s likely significant. On Tuesday, his Homeland Security secretary, John Kelly, issued guidelines created to deport more immigrants, and faster. Other immigration enforcement plans have drawn similar criticism. Unauthorised immigrants include those who enter the country without legal permission and those who overstay their visas. Executive Director Melanie Schikore says numerous recipients are on edge. “There is no infrastructure to host and receive them”, he said. “Immigration detention centers are full”.
And although Trump has pandered to the fear that illegal immigrants are responsible for an American crime wave, that scare tactic does not square with the facts.
Department of Homeland Security Secretary John F. Kelly also called for state and local agencies to “assist in the enforcement of federal immigration law”.
“When these incidents occur, it concerns me”, she said. It’s a small airport, with few cars in the parking lot.
“What we have seen, it’s leading to intimidation”. In Seattle, immigration agents seized a young man from his home in Seattle who had already received protection from deportation.
And, she adds, the changes could result in more infractions of the law. “But if we don’t have them, who’s going to pick the strawberries, milk the cows or butcher my pigs?”
While the federal law protects churched and synagogues under Homeland Security’s 2011 policy to limit ICE action at religious locations, the LA community wants to be prepared if Trump made a decision to undo the law. Mexico has made clear it won’t accept detainees the USA wants to send across the border until immigration court hearings. The report says the agency pays an average of $8,419 per flight hour for charter flights.
In effect, the ACLU’s Jennifer Chang Newell said, “the police officer who arrests you and interrogates you also convicts you”.
In the past, aggressive immigration enforcement measures were often justified as a necessary means to deter future waves of migrants from attempting to enter the USA illegally. “When it comes to a municipal police force or our Sheriff’s Department, that argument makes some sense”.
