‘Moonlight’ Wins Best Picture Oscar After ‘La La Land’ Mistakenly Announced
“I’m gonna be really proud to hand this to my friends from Moonlight”, Horowitz graciously said, and the rightful film’s cast and crew took the stage to accept their award. In the midst of it all, Warren Beatty stepped to the microphone to clarify that he had not done this intentionally.
But one of the most hilarious moments of the show was when Kimmel surprised a group of tourists on a Los Angeles tour of the city. He gave her the card and she read the victor: “La La Land”. “Moonlight… you won Best Picture“, a visibly shocked Horowitz said. This is not a joke. It was an wonderful thing to hear La La Land.
Having already broken a record at the Golden Globes with seven wins, “La La Land” seems poised to take home many an award, including best picture.
Presenter Warren Beatty says he paused so long before the name was read because the envelope read Emma Stone, “La La Land”. “And Warren refused to show the card to anybody before he showed it to me. he showed it to me, and I felt better about what had happened”.
The 89th annual Academy Awards ceremony is officially underway, honoring the best and brightest films and filmmakers to come out of Hollywood and elsewhere around the world previous year.

Moonlight director Barry Jenkins won the Oscar for Best Adapted Screenplay along with playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney who wrote the play upon which the film is based, In Moonlight Black Boys Look Blue.
The show got started with a particularly notable moment as Moonlight actor Mahershala Ali became the first Muslim actor to win an Academy Award. Its win shows that a film featuring this kind of storytelling is important to Academy voters, even if you have get through a couple of mistakes to proclaim it the victor.
