Oscars: The films that will upset La La Land’s clean sweep

Not everyone on social media was impressed with Horowitz’s conduct however, with a small but vocal minority accusing him of rudeness for grabbing the card announcing “Moonlight” as the best picture victor from actor Warren Beatty. He even explained the somewhat-long pause he gave, prior to announcing La La Land as the victor, because he was confused.

Justin Horowitz, the La La Land producer caught up in last night’s Best Picture chaos at the Oscars, has discussed the incident further.

So what happened? Someone handed Beatty the wrong envelope; the envelope he had on stage was for Best Actress, which Emma Stone won for La-La Land. Yes, that happened! So far the Oscar’s event was going smooth, with no goof ups, no controversy, nothing. Per film historian Mark Harris, there hasn’t been such a low-budget Best Picture victor since Rocky, exactly 40 years ago. After seeing the nominations, the filmmaker opened the envelope but that’s when he made a boo-boo. I’m afraid they read the wrong thing.

On Twitter, where media outlets scrambled to correct or nix their most recent tweets announcing the “La La Land” win, the reaction to the monumental mistake was swift (and yes, Steve Harvey was a running theme). However, his co-presenter Faye Dunaway took a look at the card and announced La La Land as the victor. “This is not a joke”. The mix-up was obviously likened to the moment when the crown was passed from Miss Colombia Ariadna Gutierrez to Miss Philippines Pia Wurtzbach during Miss Universe 2015. If you replay the video, you can hear Warren Beatty saying, “But it says ‘Emma Stone”. But where was that piece of paper?

The presenter of the evening Jimmy Kimmel tried to lighten the mood following the shock of the disaster.

But, in the view of others, the situation should never have happened. Thankfully, it wasn’t long before Moonlight director Barry Jenkins and the rest of the film’s cast and crew emerged to collect their rightful prize. Wasn’t that sweet of him? It sure is embarrassing.
