GOP congressman: Special prosecutor needed for Trump-Russia probe
As Real Time With Bill Maher interviews go, last night’s top-of-show chat with Republican congressman Darrell Issa was low-key, even genial, but Issa’s call for a special prosecutor to investigate Russia’s involvement in last November’s presidential election has been reverberating ever since. “You going to let that slide?” They are also looking at contacts in Russia between Russian intelligence officers or others with ties to President Vladimir Putin’s government and people connected to Trump or his campaign.
“Oh, so you’re not going to let this slide?”
But deputy White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders won’t say whether Sessions should withdraw from the investigation.
“We’re confident whatever review that Congress wants to do, I think that’s the first step”, she said.
The Times report came after Trump asked for the resignation of Michael Flynn, his national security adviser, after Flynn apparently misled Vice President Mike Pence about communications he had with a Russian ambassador before Trump took office. He said it would be inappropriate for someone connected to President Trump’s campaign to lead an investigation.
“When a special prosecutor is involved”, Christie said, things could get “completely out of control”. Let an independent investigator question witnesses under oath, subpoena documents (including Trump’s financial records) and tell us precisely what occurred during and after the campaign.
“I’ve had those conversations”, Burr told the Post, saying he thought the comments were appropriate and adding, “I felt I had something to share that didn’t breach my responsibilities to the committee in an ongoing investigation”. He also said that past independent counsel investigations have generated problems of their own.
“Look, I think the real easy answer here is that the Federal Bureau of Investigation has already said this story is BS”, Huckabee Sanders told ABC News’ George Stephanopoulos (video below).
It’s impossible to talk about a Special Prosecutor, of course, without addressing Special Prosecutor Ken Starr’s famous investigation of Bill Clinton.
New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie, a vocal Trump supporter during the campaign, said on CNN’s State of the Union he sees need for a special prosecutor.
