GOP congressman says no room for compromise in repealing Obamacare
Governors have raised concerns that the changes could undermine their efforts to expand Medicaid in their states and leave them stuck with a bigger share of the health care tab. And only our government can make it work for all of us.
“I don’t think we ought to limit ourselves”, Cornyn told reporters when asked whether he would support keeping the expansion. “We’ve taken the best of everything we can take”.
DesJarlais questioned why citizens should want to retain the Affordable Care Act.
Trump met with Republican members of the National Governor’s Association on the final day of its conference in Washington on Monday, as well as with leaders of health industry companies. They would let insurers charge consumers more if they haven’t maintained continuous coverage – a way to prevent people from signing up only when they get sick and need to submit claims.
Insurers have reportedly been pushing for that change. It might even allow states to entirely eliminate Medicaid’s basic guarantee of any coverage for people who meet program eligibility requirements. The Feds reportedly would offer $100 billion to states in innovation grants to help subsidize expensive enrollees.
At a news conference, February 27, Senate Minority Leader Charles E. Schumer (D-N.Y.), February 27, spoke about the chances he believes Senate Republicans have of repealing the Affordable Care Act. The tax was scheduled to take effect in 2018, but due to employer group protest and GOP opposition, was pushed off until 2020.
If the legislation ultimately passed in the House tracks the Policy Brief’s proposals, it would likely not only dramatically cut federal funding but also extinguish Medicaid’s guarantee of coverage for all Medicaid beneficiaries, not just the 11 million whose coverage is the direct result of the ACA Medicaid eligibility expansion.
House GOP lawmakers are preparing to introduce their bill to repeal major portions of Obamacare, with a committee markup expected the week of March 6, leadership sources told CNN. He gets coverage through Medicare thanks to changes made by the ACA.
Rep. Mark Walker, R-N.C., called the draft bill “a new health insurance entitlement with a Republican stamp on it”.
“People hate it, but now they see that the end is coming, and they’re saying, ‘Oh, maybe we love it, ‘” Trump said, without further explanation. “Not the fair thing to do for the people”.
“We’re going to come up with a solution that makes it more affordable for the states and has a bending the cost curve for the federal government but at the same time doesn’t rip the heart out of the health care systems that have been built in the states”, he said.
This will be achievable, he said, “Once we give the local police, the local law enforcement the right to go in and fight it”. Schumer predicted “middle class families are going to be hurt” by the blueprint the Trump White House has advanced. I think the introduction of simple co-pays for Medicaid would be helpful in utilizing the program effectively.
OH governor John Kasich, one of Trump’s former Republican rivals for the presidential nomination, told the Washington Post he pushed Trump not to cut Medicaid.
A separate plan from the White House could throw a curveball into the process and shift the debate.
