Oscars 2017: The 14 Most Breathtaking Moments
The mistake resulted in La La Land being called as victor of the coveted Best Movie Award, when in fact, the movie Moonlight won. Nielsen ratings are averaged out over the duration of a program and there’s no doubt that some viewers fled long before the “Moonlight”-“La La Land” screw-up.
Kimmel, 49, faces the stiff challenge of keeping the more than three-hour show – usually the most-watched non-sports telecast in the United States – upbeat in a year where no major surprises are expected and where the Oscars So White controversy seems to be a thing of the past.
Apparently, Beatty and Dunaway pulled a Steve Harvey.
What really solidified this moment was when Denzel Washington jumped up to informally marry two of the tourists whom had just gotten engaged. Viola Davis, who has been nominated twice before, finally took home her first Oscar last night-establishing her as the first Black Woman to win an acting Oscar, Emmy, and Tony. Ali, the first Muslim actor to win an Oscar, thanked his wife, Amatus Sami-Karim, and their newborn daughter. And, judging by the “redemption” narrative that surrounded the actor and director leading up to this year’s ceremony, it would appear that other people haven’t forgotten either.
Not everyone thought “Hacksaw Ridge” deserved an Oscar.
The best picture victor blunder at Sunday night’s Oscar awards was an embarrassing end to the annual award program.
You see, the award’s presenter Warren Beatty was evidently given the wrong card (he had the card for best lead actress, which was Emma Stone for “La La Land”). It checks the boxes that have made for best picture winners time and time again: It’s a stylish musical (think “Chicago“) that, thanks to its retro styling, takes us into the past (“Argo“, “The King’s Speech”), and pokes fun at Hollywood while also fundamentally flattering the town’s idea of itself at its most artistically ambitious (“Argo“, “Birdman”, “The Artist“).
“I wish I had something bigger and more meaningful to say”, Affleck said. “As a Mexican, as a Latin American, as a migrant worker, as a human being, I am against any form of wall that wants to separate us”, García Bernal said.
Iranian director Asghar Farhadi won the Foreign Language Oscar for The Salesman. The group has fought against Trump’s attempted travel ban. “Dividing the world into the “us” and “our enemies” categories creates fear-a deceitful justification for aggression and war”.
Kimmel kept the evening light-hearted, despite the show’s political bent.
The show started with Jimmy Kimmel’s opening monologue, in which he joked to French actress Isabelle Huppert that he was glad Homeland Security let her in.
However, they are all just warm-ups for the big one, the Oscars, which will be handed out in Hollywood’s Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles tonight. The ending of the show completely overshadowed everything that came before it, even as it undermined any coherent sense of trajectory.
