Steve Harvey On The Oscars Envelope Error: “Warren, I Know Your Pain”
Here is how it went down: First, Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as the Best Picture victor.
Under a PwC procedure, just two accountants know the names of the 24 winners after their names are placed in two sets of sealed envelopes.
After the La La Land group joyfully got on-stage, there appeared to be some confusion.
“This is not a joke”, Horowitz told the crowd, shortly after announcing the real victor and still clutching onto the trophy he had just been given.
Warren Beatty: Hello. Hello. “I’d put my jacket on and was just waiting for Warren Beatty to make the announcement, and as soon as Faye Dunaway said, “La La Land, ‘ I just left”. Nigel Currie, an independent branding specialist in London with decades’ worth of industry experience, said this mistake is “as bad a mess-up as you could imagine”.
“Congratulations to Moonlight on its well-deserved win for Best Picture”, GLAAD president and CEO Sarah Kate Ellis said in a statement provided to Entertainment Weekly. A slew of celebs will be taking to the stage to present the coveted golden statues, including past Oscar winners, Leonardo DiCaprio, Halle Berry, and Amy Adams.
“I feel like my reverse-psychology move worked – I finally got the film I wanted to win”, Axford said with a grin.
That Oscar is a honor for Moonlight, but Moonlight is also a gift to Hollywood, which has endured a few years of stinging criticism for lack of diversity among nominees.
In the wake of the unprecedented Best Picture announcement snafu, the real victor has been robbed of the headline it deserved: Moonlight made history last night.
However, there are duplicates of the envelopes and while Emma Stone has revealed that she was holding one of the envelopes, Warren and Faye were mistakenly given the duplicate.
It went into the evening with a record-tying 14 nominations. The film itself, plus actress Emma Stone, and director Damien Chazelle are all heavily-tipped for success.
Jenkins noted the graciousness and generosity of the La La Land producers (so kind of them to give back the trophies that they had no claim to!) and gave his love to La La Land. “I am the creator of these moments”.
Mahershala Ali won the best-supporting actor prize for his turn as a drug dealer with a heart in coming of age drama Moonlight while Viola Davis took the supporting actress statuette for her work in family drama Fences. Eighty-five countries submitted foreign language film entries. Iranian director Asghar Farhadi did not attend the ceremony to protest USA president Donald Trump’s executive order banning visitors from seven Muslim-majority countries, including Iran.
“Zootopia” won the Best Animated Feature Film.
