Kyle Busch Knocked Out of Daytona 500, Throws Serious Shade At Goodyear
Although the race track at 2017 Daytona 500 was four lanes wide, the last round of the race still ended with 16 cars crashing against each other. As the white flag flew, Busch had once again worked himself up to the second spot, but he was one of a host of drivers unsure if they had enough fuel in the tank to finish the race. The next leader, Kyle Larson, faded late, too, letting Busch take the lead in Turn 2. If we had a line of teams here saying we have to do something, maybe we’d do something.
Busch, who led a majority of the second stage, said he held on to the auto for as long as he could. “Here we are in victory lane”. “But to have a team that believes in me, that’s the most important part”.
He gathered his 29 Cup victory and first one at the fabled 500.
During an interview, Busch revealed that they did nothing wrong. “This is awesome, man”.
Chase Elliot appears to be on the way to victory to wrap up a successful week that saw the son of Hall of Famer Bill Elliott win the pole and his dual qualifying race.
Sometimes, a driver and his team merely need a big helping of the stuff Frank Sinatra used to croon about back in the day. As a result, Harvick was up front when the race restarted. “Monster killed that race!” Busch said. “As I was putting my hands and feet in the cement in victory lane I looked up and asked my team Did our auto pass tech yet?” “Sorry about that for ya”. “What I don’t normally do, and I’m going to do this today, is bring up a competition issue”.
New to NASCAR this season, once a auto goes to the garage following a wreck, it can not return to the track. He had a damaged auto, no rear view mirror, which he lost on lap 30. Johnson, the 7-time Cup champion, went spinning after contact by Jamie McMurray’s auto.
“It just seemed like that could have been avoided and was uncalled for”, Johnson told Fox Sports after the wreck.
“If I knew, I would’ve retired 17 years ago and got it that way, ” Stewart cracked. I fought it the whole straightaway and finally got turned going into [Turn] 3. I hate it for Chevrolet.
While the field played nice for the next 40 laps, the drama wasn’t over. Though it’s the first race of the season, the Daytona 500 is considered the “Super Bowl” of NASCAR, as it’s the most famous race of the series. Drivers, who might have otherwise held back in the pack waiting for race end to make moves were seen to jockey for position at the end of the stages.
STAGE 1 (60 laps): Kyle Busch won the opening stage of the Cup season, pulling ahead of Ryan Blaney to capture 10 regular-season points and one bonus point, which will carry over into the 10-race playoffs, should Busch qualify.
