Steve Harvey Commented on the Already Legendary Oscars Snafu
Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway announced La La Land as the Best Picture Award victor instead of Moonlight in a dramatic goof-up.
Kimmel also jumped in and offered a joke to alleviate the tension.
KIMMEL: “Well, I don’t know what happened”. It was reminiscent of Steve Harvey announcing in 2015 that Miss Colombia, Ariadna Gutierrez, had won the Miss Universe contest. “So I was pretty beside myself”. That his award was received by Iranian astronaut Anousheh Ansari, the first Muslim woman to travel to space, spoke volumes against what Farhadi called “the unjust circumstances” created by United States president Donald Trump’s executive order banning travel from several Muslim-majority countries, including Iran.
U.S. President Donald Trump was never explicitly mentioned during any of the night’s 24 acceptance speeches.
It was the musical’s producer Horowitz who stepped in to reveal the mistake, saying: “Guys, guys, I’m sorry. No”.
After being told there was a mix-up, La La Land producer Jordan Horowitz took to the mic and called up everyone who worked on Moonlight to the stage telling them that they were the real victors.
Beth Feldman: At first, I really thought they both needed their glasses and were having a hard time reading the card, but obviously, there was something wrong and Beatty was having a hard time deciding what to do at that moment.
“I was ecstatic, it was wonderful. It’s why I was speechless – I wasn’t speechless because I won, I was so speechless that they had to do that”. It became clear that was something wrong.
Emma Stone reached for the stars and grasped them on Sunday night.
“There suddenly appeared a guy on the stage, you know one of the guys with the headsets and he started looking for the envelope, because it felt like something was wrong”, he recalled.
“Yeah”, Stone said. Then they left the scene together to do whatever glorious activities Best Actress winners and do in tandem.
The firm has been the official accountant of the Academy Awards for the past 83 years.
It maintains sole custody of all votes, and is responsible for keeping the results secret.
But, for a second, there seems to be some sort of confusion, as the actor looks at the winning card with a perplexed face and has a second peek inside the envelope.
PwC partner Brian Cullinan and his colleague Martha Ruiz, who have personally handled the Oscars in recent years, recently explained in an interview that two sets of envelopes are on site during the event.
“The reason we even first asked to take on this role was because of the reputation PwC has in the marketplace for being a firm of integrity, of accuracy, of confidentiality”, Mr. Cullinan said in the video.
She was in no mood to address the matter during the Governors Ball that immediately followed the awards.
Cullinan told the Huffington Post before the ceremony that if a wrong victor were to be called, “We would make sure that the correct person was known very quickly”.
