“Moonlight” finally wins Best Picture of 89th Oscars after presenters’ mistake
The flame-haired beauty’s movie “La La Land” was mistakenly named the victor of the Best Picture gong by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway at the annual awards bash in Los Angeles on Sunday (02.26.17) – but officials soon realised their error and the award was instead handed to “Moonlight”.
A mortified Beatty had said on stage as the snafu began to sink in, “I opened the envelope and it said ‘Emma Stone, La La Land.’ That’s why I looked at Faye and at you”.
‘Once the error occurred, protocols for correcting it were not followed through quickly enough by Mr. Cullinan or his partner’. “I was confused because the card read “Emma Stone, La La Land”.
“La La Land” producer Jordan Horowitz was the one who stopped the celebrations: “I am sorry, there’s been a mistake”.
The 43-year-old actor took home the Best Supporting Actor gong at Sunday night’s (26Feb17) Academy Awards, thanks to his powerful performance in Moonlight. “This is not a joke”. First, Beatty went to read the victor and was visibly shook, handing the card to Dunaway who announced the wrong victor, through no fault of her own, since the card she was holding said “La La Land”. Whether that entails stopping the show, us walking onstage, us signaling to the stage manager – that’s really a game-time decision, if something like that were to happen.
As for the cast and crew of Moonlight?
As far as memorable and cringe-worthy awards show moments are concerned, last night’s Oscars ceremony delivered one of the most freaky train wrecks in awards show history.
Cullinan shared the since-deleted tweet at 9:05 p.m. PT ― Beatty and co-presenter Faye Dunaway would take the stage to present Best Picture at 9:08pm PST.
But some Oscar nominees believe it is wrong for stars to make political statements.
President Donald Trump said Monday the chaos that erupted at the end of the Oscars was due to Hollywood obsessing about him rather than concentrating on running a smooth show.
I remember it was Oscar night.
Brand management experts said it could take years for PricewaterhouseCoopers to recover.
Kimmel, 49, faces the stiff challenge of keeping the more than three-hour show – usually the most-watched non-sports telecast in the United States – upbeat in a year where no major surprises are expected and where the Oscars So White controversy seems to be a thing of the past. The two accountants also memorize the winning names.
Only two people actually know the contents of the Academy Awards’ envelopes. It confirmed that Cullinan mistakenly handed the presenters the duplicate Best Actress envelope instead of the Best Picture. She and Cullinan personally put the results into the envelopes, checked and sealed them, and then memorised the complete results in case anything happened to the envelopes.
“It’s so unlikely”, Cullinan added.
The “Moonlight” filmmakers were gracious about the error. Director Barry Jenkins looked dazed, saying, “Very clearly, even in my dreams this could not be true”.
