Jimmy Kimmel reveals Oscars ‘mass confusion’ over Best Picture howler
As Kimmel explains, he had a very different ending in mind for the show.
“I’ve been getting a lot of advice, people have said you need to say something to unite us”, he said.
Kimmel pointed out that the accounting company in control of the Oscar ballots had issued an apology taking the blame. “It was the weirdest TV finale since “Lost“.
“La La Land was somehow simultaneously the biggest victor and loser last night”. “You know it’s a odd night when the word ‘envelope” is trending on Twitter”.
He showed a clip of them reading the wrong results card and joked: “See what Warren did there?” Stage manager Gary Natoli said, “Warren is holding on to the envelope”. Kimmel said Damon made a sacrifice by passing on the role to “Manchester by the Sea” to star in a “Chinese ponytail movie instead and that movie went on to lose United States dollars 80 million”. “Then I remember, ‘Oh”.
Moonlight is announced as Best Picture and they are making their way to the stage shocked and confused, while the La La Land team is stuck in disbelief and have no idea where to go.
The comment was slammed widely on social media, with critics saying the presenter had “devalued” the award win. “That was the producer of “La La Land” who thought he won”. It took away from the glamour of the Oscars.
“My first instinct was to tell him to run, to take that Oscar and get out but he didn’t”.
He described what happened next simply as “mass confusion”.
He added, “I felt bad for both the films”. Jimmy Kimmel was definitely on his A game roasting celebrities from the onset. I watched it against Ronald Reagan, I’ve watched it against so many other people. There would have been a Bed Bath & Beyond coupon inside.
Poking fun at best actress nominee Meryl Streep, Kimmel called her “highly overrated” and asked the audience to give her a standing ovation.
“It wasn’t Warren Beatty’s fault, and Faye Dunaway got the hell out of there, ” Kimmel said.
Though clearly said in jest, the facetious roasting parroted the comments Trump made about Streep after she spoke out against him at last month’s Golden Globes ceremony.
He also jokingly asked Streep if she’s wearing an “Ivanka”, hinting the presidential daughter’s flailing fashion brand after it gets pulled out by high fashion retailers such as Nordstrom.
“She wasn’t even in a movie this year, we just wrote her name in out of habit”, Kimmel said.
