Oscars 2017: How is Jimmy Kimmel doing?
He had some solid Trump jokes.
During the insane ending, Kimmel was actually in the audience, sitting next to his “rival” Matt Damon, whom he had mocked all night long. Jimmy started by showing a clip of Bonnie & Clyde stars Warren Beatty, 79, and Faye Dunaway, 76, presenting the award – incorrectly. This wasn’t Kimmel’s fault.
A partner from PricewaterhouseCoopers, the accounting firm which tabulates the votes and is responsible for handling the results, handed the wrong envelope to the two presenters. “A lot of people thought a bomb went off”, Kimmel said”. Kimmel joked on Monday night’s show. Things were going fine. She took it and read out – La La Land. “It was the flawless end to the night, but then obviously once the whole envelope thing happened, it got scrapped”.
While waiting for the speeches to conclude, Kimmel recalls that he and Damon began to notice some commotion with the stage manager onstage, and Damon remarked, “I think they got the victor wrong”. The host walked out on stage with his cellphone projected onto a large screen in front of the crowd as his thumbs quickly went to work.
“Warren Beatty has had so much sex he can’t think about it right”, Kimmel said during the ABC aftershow. But Kimmel had no idea what to do.
“The audience is confused, the people standing around me are confused, I assume everyone watching at home is confused – and I’m probably supposed to do something, because no one around me is doing anything”, he said.
And since he was running the show, Kimmel felt obligated to figure out what the hell happened. You know, the day Jimmy hosted the show during which the biggest mix-up in the history of the Academy Awards occurred. NBD.
“La La Land” which won six trophies including the best director and actress, was incorrectly declared the best picture by Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway at the 89th Academy Awards, instead of the real victor “Moonlight”.
