Don’t blame me for SEAL’s death
Trump was not in the White House situation room for the raid – his Twitter account tweeted and deleted a promotion for an upcoming interview while the attack was ongoing.
What about Trump’s assertions that this was “a very successful mission”, which produced “tremendous amounts of information”?
Bill Roggio, the editor of the Foundation for Defense of Democracies’ Long War Journal, previously told Business Insider that Al Qaeda’s branch in Yemen plans worldwide attacks and that some of the intelligence on these attacks can be recovered only by going in and confiscating hard drives. Owens reportedly died in the exchange of gunfire. An MV-22 Osprey tilt-rotor aircraft carrying Seals malfunctioned, crashed and wounded three of them.
Owens said he was troubled by that.
Monday: “As I mentioned before, I think you can’t ever say that when there’s, most importantly loss of life and people injured, that it’s 100 percent successful. I’m going to get an Emmy for this, most applause for a dead soldier on my watch.’ That is the sickness of this man”.
Owens’ father, Bill, told the Miami Herald in a recent interview that he did not want to meet Trump when the president attended Owens’ dignified transfer at Dover Air Force Base in DE on February 1. Some Twitter users are criticizing the President for what they perceive as Trump “exploiting Owens’ death” or using him as a political ploy. “I told them I don’t want to meet the president”.
“Don’t hide behind my son’s death to prevent an investigation”, the elder Owens warned Trump.
It’s not clear what such an inquiry would entail. Whether it changes the entire conversation around the controversial commander-in-chief remains the key question as we head into the next phase of this administration.
But Ryan Owens’ father, Bill Owens, is calling for an investigation of what went wrong in the raid. Owens’ son, William “Ryan” Owens, was 36.
Owens did not immediately return requests from CNN for comment on Sunday.
In recent weeks, White House officials have steadfastly defended the raid as a success.
A senior administration official said the raid is not mentioned in the latest draft of the speech, but added that a reference to it could still be included before the text is finalized.
Though he hailed the operation as a success, Trump said Tuesday that he really can’t be blamed for Owens’ death – emphasizing that it was planned by former President Barack Obama’s administration.
The reaction on social media was mixed.
