Trump Wants Immigration Bill Passed With Help From Both Parties
Trump is not inclined to include a path to citizenship for most of the people in the USA illegally, according to reports, but would consider providing one for those who were brought to the U.S.as children by their parents.
Democrats in Washington remained skeptical despite the reversal.
Trump, during his first address to the Congress+, noted that “nations around the world, like Canada, Australia and many others have a merit-based immigration system”.
Attendees said one of the Fox News anchors – it’s unclear whether it was Chris Wallace or Bret Baier – asked whether giving some form of legal status to certain undocumented immigrants would mean that Trump wasn’t keeping his promises to his base.
Trump believes a comprehensive immigration bill that would allow undocumented immigrants to hold a job and require them to pay taxes has a chance of clearing Congress, CNN also reports. The office is called VOICE, Victims of Immigrant Crime Engagement.
The one area where President Trump differs from his predecessor, he believes that because they entered the US illegally, they have already violated federal law and that is sufficient to warrant removal. A majority of those picked up in a weeklong series of raids have been convicted of crimes, although one-quarter were non-criminals.
He announced a new Homeland Security initiative to “save” Americans from illegal immigrants.
Trump’s proposed shift to “a merit-based immigration system” would reduce the inflow of unskilled migrants, but perhaps also raise the inflow of skilled migrants.
Trump and his administration routinely brag about these moves; they crow that they’ve taken “the handcuffs off” immigration agents.
He did use that phrase multiple times as a candidate, attacking then-President Barack Obama for not using the term. Enough is enough. If you want to have a discussion about immigration, start with the facts, be honest and make your case, enough of the talking points.
Trump’s speech, however, gave no such indication, even though it mentioned immigration reform. And it’s not at all clear that President Trump is willing to work hard to make his dreams come true. They’re the ones pushing for a broader crackdown on legal immigration.
In a new order Trump signed last week, the federal government expedited deportations, discouraged new asylum seekers and targeted unauthorized immigrants who may or may not have committed a serious crime, according to a memo from the Department of Homeland Security made public last week.
