Krauthammer on Joint Session Address: ‘Without a Doubt’ Trump’s Best Speech
The president’s speech, broadcast live by CNN, addressed contentious issues of immigration, terrorism, healthcare, economy, bipartisanship and America’s diversity.
“President Trump’s speech tonight fell short on the positive, inclusive agenda that would unite our nation and on solutions to America’s most pressing challenges”.
During the 2016 USA presidential election campaign, it was noted that his rival Hillary Clinton often wore white at key moments, though she never explicitly stated whether this was in reference to the suffragettes. “It’s probably good for him to appear more presidential, more statesman-like, now”.
But occasionally, the mask slipped.
Beshear says Trump’s attacks on intelligence agencies, the press, federal courts and others are “eroding our democracy” and reckless.
A handful of studies, including one from the Cato Institute, show that immigrants are less likely to commit crimes than people born in the United States. “But let’s be clear about what Donald Trump is doing in inviting family members who saw a loved one murdered by undocumented immigrants”.
During an interview with “Fox & Friends” Tuesday morning, Trump previewed his address, hinting he would take the latter of the two possible approaches.
In his speech, Trump made references to immigrants who are criminals and security threats that are unable to sustain themselves financially.
The moment illustrated that, sunnier language aside, Trump is not suddenly pivoting to the center. “In fact, this should have been his inaugural address”.
“President Trump made it clear in his speech tonight that many of his top priorities are still severely out of touch with our values in NY”.
President Donald Trump is set to give an address to a joint session of Congress on Tuesday – but it technically won’t be his first State of the Union address.
Mr Trump continued that “by finally enforcing our immigration laws, we will raise wages, help the unemployed”, and save billions of dollars.
He defended his currently-frozen immigration and travel order aimed at residents of seven majority-Muslim nations, which has been his most controversial policy yet.
After the speech, in a video on Facebook Bernie Sanders said: ‘Since the beginning of this year, we have seen unprecedented grassroots energy. “We can not allow our Nation to become a sanctuary for extremists”. What would happen to unauthorized immigrants already here – always the crucial question – was absent.
“I am here to deliver a message of unity”, Trump started the address, and went ahead immediately to pay tribute to the Black History Month and condemning semitism, in what is largely viewed as his best speech ever. And he would call for more spending to rebuild old roadways and airports and reduce taxes. What Americans will take away from Tuesday’s address is a president who at last struck an inspiring, even bipartisan tone, who asked Americans to be unafraid to dream of “American footprints on distant worlds”, and of a country where having “millions lifted from welfare to work, mothers safe from fear, schools where children learn in peace” is “not too much to ask”.
We got a few more specifics on Obamacare, but much remains vague there.
