Jimmy Kimmel brands Donald Trump ‘racist’ in scathing Oscars monologue
As it reached the final and most anticipated award of the evening, Best Picture, actors Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway (who starred together in the 1967 film Bonnie and Clyde) walked onto the stage to announce the victor. After guiding an auditorium full of celebrities through some very awkward dancing, Timberlake yielded the stage to first-time host Jimmy Kimmel.
Kimmel leapt into the situation with his cheeky one-liners to keep the crowd laughing. Kimmel said, to big applause.
“Thank God Denzel was there to make sense”, he said. “This is Nicole Kidman”.
“I see Denzel Washington in the front row trying to get my attention”.
“As you know, I don’t have to tell anybody, the country is divided right now”. celeb news
Backstage, Moonlight director Barry Jenkins was asked to explain the moment. That’s why I looked at Faye, and at you. “Then everyone just stood there kind of shell shocked”, he said. He also spoke about the Oscars’ post-show parties, saying, “I hear that the absolute worst party of the evening was the Vanity Fair party”.
The audience applauds, as the cast, crew and producers of “La La Land” take the stage to accept what many had anticipated, the coveted honor of best picture. Though the Oscars this year will be remembered for the Best Picture mix-up between La La Land and Moonlight, it also gave us another gem – Whispering Ryan Gosling. “He was looking, and then he showed it to her, and she said La La Land”. We should all try to do as well when sudden disappointments come our way. “It was the weirdest TV finale since Lost“.
The accountancy firm is in charge of making sure the winners are kept secret right up until they’re announced – and this is done by keeping all of the cards, as well as backup cards, in identical briefcases.
Along with M Night Shyamalan and PricewaterhouseCooper (PwC), US President Donald Trump is now somewhat claiming responsibility for the biggest stuff-up in Oscars history.
The moment was not only unfortunate and embarrassing for La La Land, but it also robbed Moonlight of its deserved moment in the sun. “You felt embarrassed for Dunaway and Beatty, who clearly knew something was amiss when he opened the envelope but didn’t know how to proceed”, wrote Entertainment Weekly critic Jeff Jenson. “Did you notice that?” he said intently. Warren Beatty didn’t say anything.
Aside from a string of running gags throughout the live telecast about Kimmel’s faux feud with his long-time pal, actor Matt Damon, the 45th U.S. president proved to be Kimmel’s favourite leitmotif. And they always like pulling out the race card.
It is a symbol of our ageist society that many people doubtlessly leaped to the conclusion that Faye and Warren had had a senior moment before an worldwide TV audience when they mistakenly declared “La La Land” as last night’s Best Picture victor.
