Here’s How That Massive Oscars Mistake *Really* Happened
Mahershala Ali won his first Oscar on Sunday for his supporting role in “Moonlight”, kicking off what could be a big night for diversity at the Academy Awards.
After last year’s #OscarsSoWhite fiasco, this season had plenty of diversity in the nominees.
The winning film tells a story of a young Cuban black man who struggles through life in a rough neighborhood of Miami.
The host showed a “clip” of what happened, with a close-up of the envelope, which read, “Moonlight is not the film that didn’t win best picture”. Those wins were expected.
By 1 a.m. Monday, “Moonlight” distributor A24 posted an image of the Best Picture card, captioned, “It’s real, we got the proof”. I think it’s one of the best films of all time. And once again: “congrats to ‘Moonlight.’ A truly lovely picture made by some even more lovely people”. Two people who will for sure never forget the Best Picture mix-up are Damien Chazelle and Barry Jenkins. With Emma Stone revealing that she already had a copy of the Best Actress card, it is possible that the second copy were given to Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway, instead of the Best Picture card. Most of the audience could barely believe what was unfolding, so the actors on stage, including La La Land stars Gosling and Emma Stone, were understandably perplexed.
Harvey later alluded to a Kimmel gag from earlier in the night, when tourists who thought they were going to a wax museum walked into the live broadcast of the Oscars. On the weekend of January 27, following the film’s eight Academy Award nominations, the film played in 1,104 theaters. Watch his face before he hands the envelope to Dunaway. After the cast and crew of La La Land took the stage to accept their award for Best Picture, they were soon informed they had not actually won.
Georgie said that as this was happening the representatives of accounting firm PWC, which is responsible for the voting, tabulation and governance of presenting the awards, were signalling to one of the producers that the ceremony had to stop.
The events of Sunday’s memorable Oscars will be talked about for years to come. An unlikely victor actually winning has occurred before as well. Well, it turns out two envelopes are printed for each category, just in case one gets lost, or there’s some kind of mistake I guess.
