Storms move east after killing three in US Midwest
The Oklahoma-based forecast center said 45 million people from Texas to OH faced some risk of bad weather.
As expected, the National Weather Service has issued a tornado watch for all of East Central Illinois until 10 p.m. Tuesday.
At least 14 people were also hospitalised in Ottawa with different degrees of injuries. Nothum adds the injuries to the other drivers were minor, “which is incredible when you see how far these tractor trailer units were pushed”. A second fatality occurred when a 71-year-old man was killed in the southeast IL town of Crossville in White County. “Again, constantly looking to make sure there’s no people injured, or anything like that”, Ottawa Police Capt. Dave Gualandri said.
Most of Interstate 55 near Perryville, Missouri was closed overnight due to storm damage there.
Trees were left broken close to the base, cars mangled, roofs torn off their bases, and homes damaged. “I was driving back to school in Murray, Kentucky, and the wind was blowing something fierce”.
Debbie Loughridge, 61, of Naplate, rode out the storm with her son in the bathtub of their rented house.
“Right as he told me, I saw a tractor trailer was flipped over right off the side of the road”.
In addition to tornado damage, more than 800 wind damage and hail incidents were also reported. “Proud of the community that’s coming together to support those with damage”, Gov. Rauner said.
Hundreds of homes have been damaged or destroyed in storms that began on Tuesday.
At least three area people were reported dead after Tuesday’s storms.
Naplate was where one of six tornadoes were reported to have touched down during a round of violent and severe storms Tuesday night.
In 2016, the US tornado rate was below average, as it had been for the past four years, according to the National Centers for Environmental Information.
Nevins said emergency crews have completed a search of the village, and officials are confident they have accounted for everyone.
“Recovery efforts can become more unsafe with dropping temperatures the potential for additional rain and even in some part of Illinois just turning into snow”, said James Joseph, Illinois Emergency Management Agency Director. The chief said warning sirens activated about 15 minutes before the tornado struck, giving residents sufficient warning to take cover.
